I hear that all the time, but it's yet to be an issue for me and I've used the same pair for the last 6 or 7 years and I've had 2 tapes eaten....

I'm not a fan of the On stuff, it's "good" but I thought that it lacked character. I dug the YOTR ep and record but I felt that (IMHO)even it wasn't as cool, from an audio/arrangement perspective.

I cant believe you guys are really discussing this. ADATs suck. The transports suck, the were unreliable, they ate tapes, the converters sucked. There was nothing good about them, EXCEPT they were "cheap". ADATS and Tascams are probably the reason some of us could start smaller rooms. They were our invitation to the party. They hold some charm for some people because of that. The idea the a certain record was recorded on them so that makes the format good is insanity. Sergeant Pepper could have been recorded on ADATs and they would still suck.

I understand the "charm" comment.

ADAT's suck.
So did a number of my ex-girlfriends.  
(in the most negative meaning of the word "suck", that is)
However, some good times were had.
I remember that they all had their own "charm" about them.

If your first 16-24 track multi track experience was on an ADAT, you were probably stoked about it at the time.  I was.  Bought 2 black faces as soon as they came out for 4000.  I was totally excited.  

Of course the day I replaced them was an incredibly happy day as well.  I don't miss the ADAT sound, or waiting for them to lock up, or splicing a tape back together and copying it onto another tape and then trying to get them to sync, and.... but I did have fun with them and make some good music with them.  Go back to them?  Hell no!

charm?  well, there's good in almost everything if you look deep enough.

'charm' must be an aquired taste...   like a fine wine or a good beer.   Some people have good taste and others don't.

I'm in no way suggesting that ADAT's were awesome or that they made me want to go out and buy records or ditch analog or any other kind of crazy outlandish claim like that.   All I'm saying is that I didn't mind them as much as other people say they did.   Every piece of gear has tempermentalities.   I had good luck with ADAT.   I'll never go back, but they didn't suck IMO.   They had a sound...   and that sound while not amazing awesome or amazingly bad, contributed to the 'charm' or 'colored sound' of some recordings.   Not that it would have made that big of a difference - I can just hear it and I think it's cool.

As for a more witty response to my indy rock membership being revolked.   I'm too busy working (that's right J, in a studio, with bands, making records) to ponder such a response.   Anyway, I still have my License to Ill.

I think I'll go listen to The Spin Doctors now.

To be honest, the J brought JLP to the mastering of the Secret Club record begging me to match it's sound quality. He'll deny it, of course, but he insisted I do it...

viking, the emo kids are under the blanket of indie rock, they are all card carying members.....they might cry about it, but they all have valid memberships.  so they won't take you.  and the beasties, to some varying degree, platinum status members as well.  so your licsense to ill has also been revoked as soon as they heard about your indie rock membership being canceled.

looks like you and the spin doctors will be working on their come back record, good luck with that.

Right on, either one works for me (I wasn't kidding about Journey). What amp sim are you using? I have amplitube, which I use as an eq/effect, but I also have a free suite of plugs(jcm 900,twin, ds-1,univibe,etc) and both of the amp sims sound AWESOME. I have a feeling that J. is going to revoke my membership, for the Journey comment...

Guitar Rig looked cool, but, I thought that you had to use hardware to make it work(please correct me if I'm wrong)? I couldn't justify the expense for an amp sim that I wouldn't use that often. If I'm incorrect, then I might have to check into that... are the delays cooler than any of the WAVES stuff?
