so far the records you guys have named fit into one of these two categories, if not both.

1.  the production crew involved was top notch seasoned pros and could make a 1" 16 track do something useful.

2.  the records' sonic qualities were manipulated to the adat sound and the vibe of the record was built around something they could not control.  equally as genius as #1, but still doesn't make adats cool, or even good.

either way, adats still suck.  if you like that brittle, thin sound, then adats are for you.  i guess i shouldn't be so surprised, lots of people like SM-57s.

and i'm backing Brad up.  his questions MUST be answered.

Jagged Little Pill was going to be my refrence as well.

Because it sounds good or because you like the songs? Or because it sold well?

I'm Jagged Little Pill was going to be my refrence as well.   I love that record and I really do feel that it has an ADAT 'charm' to it that I think wouldn't have been there if it was tracked to 2".   Not that it wouldn't have been a good record...   the songs rule and that's why it's so great.

wait, are we talking about an alanis morrisette record here?

A radio station in my town was playing 'Hand in My Pocket' before the record dropped and before anyone new it was anything special.   I bought it shorty after it came out because I thought it sounded cool and the songs were really good.

I like Jagged Little Pill because the songs are good.

I like ADAT's because I had a good experience with them.

The songs wouldn't have been as good recorded to any other format?

Otherwise I'm lost as to why JLP was brought up in the discussion of ADATS...

For me personally (not speaking for Kevin), I like the way it sounds... I think that it has a cool vibe to it and the songs are pretty good (normally this is not something I like to admit). I can't say that I've owned (or listened) to a copy of it in the last 6 years but, if I happen to be listening to the radio or riding in the car, with my wife, and one of those songs come on I don't change the station. My point was that ADAT's are usable and I kind of dig the way the sound. It's not like I'll be getting rid of my DAW anytime soon, but I still use ADAT's in a limited capacity and they don't sound half bad. That's all I got....

Brad,

Not at all...   the songs are good no matter what they were recorded on.   I just think the ADAT factor added to the charm of that recording.   Good songs are good songs.   I've heard stuff tracked on four tracks, eight tracks and 16 track 1/2 inch analog that rule because the songs are solid and performed well.   Gear and media are just colors and textures used to capture sound differently.

As for my indie rock membership...   that's cool.   I'll have to go chill with the emo kids until they let me back in your camp.

i was just getting into recording seriously when ADATs started disappearing. i wish i could completely blame it for my old band's records sounding pretty nasally and nasty, but...

if, however, in 5 years we're having a discussion about the 'charms' of the HD-24, fists is a gonna fly.  Twisted Evil

(p.s. i like 1" 16 track. i'd take it over 95% of digital, personally)

for every two ADATs you're using, you need a third as a backup for when one of the first two go down...I don't miss my ADATs at all...

I think all the On stuff sounds better than Fantastic Planet.
