I miss it too. I had the Soma for a week in Norfolk after Fred had it in Belgium and now it has gone on to Sam in London; so the Soma is doing the rounds, leaving a trail of broken hearts in its wake when the couriers come to collect.

Still, I have here a growing pile of shiny pennies ... and a few dogs for sale.

Out of curiosity, do you know if 6700e is the street price?  10K US?

as of today it says that 6700 Euro is $9,451.50250676 USD

or only $1,181.44~ per band/per channel ..


Wonder if we can get a 4 band 5.1 version for $28,354.50? 
(what's that, about the price of a Masterpiece mkI..)

The price is very fair, considering the sheer amount of work this thing needs when putting it together.

I'm actually a little frightened to take one to the test.. I know I shouldn't, but maybe I will.

I'm sure they are an engineering feat, and sound amazing. I didn't mean to say they were overpriced .. you always get what you pay for.

140 subminature relays, handwound mu-metal coils, CMOS logic for Q switches . . . $10k for a unit that will last you 10 years, (and push up your billing in all those years) is not a bad investment...


.. but in perspective you could get 5x B&W N802's used and have a 5.1 system for 10 years ... which will give a higher return? Depends on your clientele I suppose. (among many other variables).

Actually, Jaakko,  I think I first heard about Jonte's work because of your posts a couple of years back, and then I got into conversation with him ... and now. As I say: dogs for sale - pick one of four.

I'd say you have to up the ante with the dog quality. That way you could get stud fees instead. Emoticon

I never had my hand on a fairmann, but
have an EAR825Q in the rack and the built quality is a step up.
sonicaly they're completely different, the ear sound exactly what you would expect from a tube eq, it sounds large, soft and musical.
for the time i've spent with the Soma, if you don't know there're tube in it, you can not expect it.
just passing thru without equing it sounds euphonic in a very subtile way, most of it because of the enormous lundhal xformers i guess.
flipping from stero to ms sounded transparent.
when i've started to equalise, i felt that each band added a kind of coherence to the equed part wich is quite unique, the Etip have a bit that too but not as pronounced.

i really liked the controls and ergonomy, it's 2 years i've got 1 rack on each side and nothing in the middle, just a small rolling table with keyboard and mouse, and i really like it, it's great to keep focus on the music,
it's just the first time in a while i so much wanted to touch a unit with both hands, in an almost compulsive way.

let's see i'll probbaly reconsider the ergonomy of the studio when i'll get it here if i continue to have this syndrom 

the rubbed elma big knobs have a great stable feeling in the hand, and the step of the switches have a soft feeling, i could turn the control in a very intuitive way
their disposition was perfect, as i said i have the rack on the side and don't look at the gears and when i turned the knobs my hands found their way naturaly on it.

as you say you got what you pay for, and i'd say that at that price it is still a good one.
