101 Can Any one help me out here??? MCI 636 ?
« on: January 11, 2006, 11:17:08 PM »

Hello all,
My first post here...

Need to ask some questions about an MCI 636 mixing deck... so here go's

FYI:
This unit is none plasma V/U and has no automation.
PSU(‘s) =  power supply units.

My friend just got hold of a used 36 channel mixing deck, we read the manual and all the supplied book's that came with the unit, we then proceeded to go ahead and punch down on the pundit connectors as the deck has been moved around a bit
and just wanted to make sure we have no lose wires on the underside of the pre amps, we then looked at the hand book again and started to hook up the PSU’s cables to the mixing unit

Anyhow, after rechecking all the A/B and hook ups we proceeded to turn on the PSU’s and well after we did No V/U light’s came on, the fist half from say 1 to 15 lit up but the other half of the deck, there was no Led red light at the bottom of the per amp, the V/u meters blipped up and went to zero, and after 20 min up time one of the channels started to smoke ...,, Shocked

Embarassed   Can anyone help out here, here is a list of questions I have below  Embarassed :

1. When hooking up the connections on the back of the mci- 636,
there is a flap where there are connecters headers, like A,
B, C, D, we have a connector that is called J3 where is it
suppose to go on a 36 channel mci deck and what is it for?

2. The PSU's, do they run in-conjunction with each other or are
they independent as when we turn on all PSU’s only half the
deck come up and no panel/Vu lights when all the wires are
connected to the rear sub divided.

3. Where do the lamps get the power from A. a hook up direct
from a PSU’s or internally from the connectors from the rear
  panel flap marked A, B, C, D...

4. When we hook up both PSU’s to the 636, as per Manuel, one of
the pre amp channels started smoking coming from channel pre
amp 7 or 15 after 20 min’s up time. Dose it need to be
pulled out before re-powering up the 636?

5.when hooking up the psu's the audio sub divided side marked
Audio a/b have power, as for the other side there is no
power; and all fuses are ok when checking them out with a
 test meter.

6. At the header in on the PSU plug (low voltage side) there
are a few wires that have been cut off right before the
plug,(why ???) do I need to rewire the plug and is this
why only half the deck has life? And if so what are the
pin outs (what wire go's to what pin)?

7. Ground, do I need to run an independent #14 or 12 wire for
ground from any Gnd point on the rear pannel on the 636 to
ground or back to the PSU’s?

Thank  you  in   Advance   for   any   help !!!

I'd suggest that the magnitude of the difficulties that you're describing make me reluctant to start the process of talking anyone who's not a fairly well-experienced tech through faultfinding and/or further diagnosis.

My recommendation would be to contact an experienced tech in your locality and have him make a few observations and take some measurements. Some things should be able to be remedied quickly on-site, but if there's a major problem, you shouldn't try to get too far into it or leave it powered on for too long without some experienced eyeballs in the room.

I have the feeling that I have more experience in my little finger than you do in your whole body about audio electronics..
