Let's Be Productive
« on: January 03, 2006, 02:59:36 AM »

Heya Folks,

Just noticed here in the past few hours that there has been a slight shift in topic discussions.  It seems that some infantile thoughts and personal attacks have been occuring.

This disturbs me.

As a professional, I view this forum board as a tool to learn more about what feeds me and my family.  This space for me is a learning and a sharing environment.  What thoughts I try to share, I believe are creative, not distructive.  Opinions:  not personal attacks.  Pro/Con comparisions: not simply "This blah, blah sucks".

Steve Albini has been very generous in his time and willingness to share with us his experiances and expertise on a topic we all love and want to become better at.  I'm VERY greatful for it.  I hope you are too.

Can we all please just stay focused on the thread topics at hand, and try not to veer off onto tangents.  Try to discuss and express creative opinions and not be reduced to name-calling and starting flame wars.

Thanks for your time.

Yeah, dude. Massenberg never got boned like this.
Being accessable is not a weakness waiting to be pounced upon.
It's a view into how someone else does it. I dig that.

If it were me, I would ban trolls in 2 seconds after their first post... then it would be up to them to come and ask for re-instatement...

Yes Kenny... I am talking about you....

I'm sorry for posting some of Steve's credits in that other thread.  They were included for reference only, not for penile measurement.

i learned a few things in that exchange, it it may affect the way i mix in the future... e.g. i was directed to charles dye's forum at gearslutz, where he discusses mix techniques;  and i thought they talked only about nib nobs there!

i got to realizing how much charles dye's mixing seems to have improved since "la vida loco", and i had a small personal revelation that the reference to "candy" in  "sex and candy" is probably not as literal as i thought.

special thanks to bob o for his role as socrates, to steve for his brilliant oedipus rex, and to fletcher and mixerman for their backstage work with the yin and the yang.

Yes Kenny... I am talking about you....

Oh. I see. This "is" more productive. Let's make this the Kenny is a DICK thread but hope that Kenny won't respond because then he'll really be a DICK, because he won't be being very productive which is the whole point of this thread. Gotcha!!!

If you really weren't trying to bait me, you could have the left the initial post as stated.

Clarification was not necessary.

It was well written and I happen to agree with it. Nice job.

Yes. I can see that. But in this infinite wisdom of knowing a DICK from a Brown nose, is your word final? Is it fair to call these people DICKS yet think it is unfair to let these people defend themselves. Your word is the law.

What happened to a free and open exchange of ideas?

Am I at your mercy O lord. Cast me out. Call me a DICK and forbid a response?

Wire my jaw shut?

A weiner I can handle. DICK is just rude and uncalled for. And damn disrespectful.

Oh. And Steve. In a certain threatening PM I was accused of making my attacks too personal. My ammunition was only from information that you so proudly published on this here Internot thru articles and forum threads.

If you're not willing to defend your practices and beliefs than I have no hope for you.

Peace.

Wow......

Sure didn't take long for this thread to get spun up and out of control real quick  Rolling Eyes

Here's a tip for those that would like to eliminate the wasted time of having to view posts from troublesome members:  In the upper right-hand corner of each post is a link to "ingore all messages by this user".  If you click it, all posted messages by that particular author will not be shown to you as you browse.

Steve.... Please feel free to lock this thread and place it as a "Pinned" or "Sticky" for all to learn from.

Thanks

Yep.

Well, you hopped into a discussion that didn't pertain to you and started telling someone he had no talent. That's a dick move. You weren't defending yourself, you were being a dick.

I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Tell me and I'll respond to that, if a response is really what you want.

It seems like I spend half my time here defending my practices and doing other similar internet dork-jousting. Tell me what you want defended and I'll give you an earful. Don't just make a veiled reference to something and expect me to understand what you're going on about. I have no idea what you want me to defend, but I have no problem defending myself. Oddly, I find it stimulating to be forced to reconcile my thinking with other peoples', and I'm happy to do it.

Kenny,

You know you cannot accuse me of "brown-nosing" Mr. Albini, as you and everyone else here knows that he and I have not always concurred.

But you and I and everyone else here also know that Mr. Albini has indeed established within his forum an environment conducive to a free and open exchange of ideas.

The mark of a professional is of one who can tolerate opposing viewpoints. Steve has done that here so far. He does not delete posts, or edit them. He may take a stance which may seem confrontational or even dogmatic, but I have never seen him censor content here (unlike other audio forums). He has allowed divergent viewpoints to be expressed, and let this forum's participants have at it as they may and as they are able, in order to articulate their views.

Therefore, your implication that Steve is lacking in allowing "a free and open exchange of ideas," is wholly incorrect. And your conduct on this forum has been wholly unprofessional. That is putting it politely.

This is Steve Albini's forum, it's HIS house. Like it, or leave it. Nobody's putting a fucking gun to your head, forcing you to lurk here.

I don't always agree with Steve, and sometimes he downright pisses me the fuck off. But he's dedicated to his craft, passionate about music, articulate in his views, and that's better than most of what's going on in the INTER"NOT" these days in regards to audio arts and sciences.

Steve's forum has me thinking about what I do, the way I do it, the way I deliver what's done. That's NOT the same as AGREEING with every damn thing he posts or believes in...and Kenny, I believe you are seriously misguided when you imply as such.

Look, we are all passionate about music, and that's why we are here. We're all searching for for a path to realization of The Muse. Every one of us has a personal reality, and your personal reality will never be mine, and vice-versa. But some inherent difference doesn't negate an inherent commonality.

We are all connected, by The Muse. I find it profoundly counter-productive that we get so wrapped up in, what is in the big scheme of things, such petty differences.

You are named "Kenny" and he is named  "Steve," and you say "producer" and he says "engineer,:" and all that is "true" on a very small incremental level. But that is not the WHOLE truth.

THE WHOLE TRUTH IS THAT WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

I propose we address each other as such.

Can I get a witness?

I am going to take a moment and apologize to Steve for taking some shots at him tonight on my forum
He said some shit that pissed me off and I went off on him a bit
So, I apologize for stooping to a place I usually have to moderate
So I am moderating myself here and taking a moment to say I am sorry for choosing to respond as I did on my forum
Steve tends to be quite contentious and I can usually handle that in a professional manner but tonight it pushed my "Fuck You" button
So as an adult here, I am sorry
