Rupert Neve Portico 5042 Question.
« on: March 16, 2011, 09:32:25 PM »

Does anyone here use a Rupert Neve Portico 5042 Tape Emulator?

I quite like this unit.

To those of you who might use one:

1) What kind of levels do you like to hit this unit with both for tracking and mixing?

2) What settings do you generally like for the saturation controls in combination with the line trim? I imagine this can vary.

Cheers,

Andrew

I used to have one. If you have never used a real tape machine, it is seriously impossible to know how to use.  If you dont know exactly what your tryin to get out of it its almost impossible to benefit from.  I sold mine and stuck with my studer A80, but its a great unit if your trying to seriously go for "that" sound.   IMO, it just slows/warms everything up, basically the opposite of what the Portico 5012 does to sounds- so they are a good combo. YMMV

I generally find that driving the unit quite hard (peaks at +10dBu on the meters) gives the best results. It has an interesting colour to it which certainly is akin to low ratio compression but also a little different. It seems to tame the edginess of transients and smooth things over a little.

Just wondering how other people like to set up it's gain structure.

Interesting..

I like to use it on the a stereo bus for the complete track, drive the saturation to about just over half with the input hitting around -11dbu and she sounds fantastic.

Nice warm sound, takes the harshness and give it a velvet sound.

What else do people use it on. Its very nice on vocals as well.
