best positioning for near field monitors
« on: December 19, 2005, 01:16:41 PM »

I have a pair of roland d90 monitors, sitting on my omnirax console, I want to know the best place to posisition them, Should they be the same distance apart as they are from you. Right now I have two 19 inch monitors sitting between them and wonder if the are to far apart   just wanted some advice on the best place to  posistion them  I turned them over on their sides with the tweeters in last night and think that may have helped some  Jeff

Your head, and the speakers should form a perfect triangle.. easy most times, as we have pointy heads.

Elevations should also match up pretty well.

Once you get them about right, move your head up, and down to listen for the sweetspot, if it's 2" down, raise the speakers 2".

quickest and most precise way I have found is..place them ea. on a cloth and have some helpers slide them in and out while marking the spots you think sound best..(most accurate)full,even,dispursed...etc.
If you dont have a shelf..use a piece of 1x8,1x10 etc. and slide them along it.

I used Barefoot's 2D wall calculator posted here

http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=630

A bit of work to do the calculations but I ended up with a nice triangle 6'3" - 7'0" on the sides. 36" - 42" off the ground and roughly 25" off the side walls and 33" off the walls behind the speakers.

I then played around inside those spacial cubes so to speak and found a nice spot.

Hope this helps

You might find tighter imaging by having the woofers to the inside as well.  I find this gives me a betetr centered image on bass and kik drums etc.  (Bass sounds tend more often than not to be mono, while higher sounds may be in stereo)

I have been mixing with tweeters to the inside anc I can tell you that my stereo image is better and probably I am mixing slightly faster.
I just followed Alesis guidelines concerning their updated monitors.
