Xophonic - Ever seen one of these?
« on: December 22, 2005, 07:09:43 AM »

I have found this 1957 "Popular Mecahnics" (spanish edition) at my parent's home and there was this review on some magnificent piece of gear.

It seems to be an attempt at recreating "the sound of a real concert hall, with ambient reverberation and reflexions", and, as they say in the commercial printed on page 156 (quote)

Cool!!!

Both have been lost in time... or space?

Ever used one of either the Xophonic or the UREI?

Still, the Xophonic is a longer trametravel. It was built in 1957, while the UREI is a copy built in 1971.

What great timing.  I found and bought one this past year.  I've realized that I've got too much stuff piling up and I'm going to sell a bunch of stuff off including the Xophonic.

$150 plus shipping.

P.S.  The Time Cubes are cool.  They've got 2 at the Sound Factory(www.sunsetsound.com), originally used mostly for pre-delay there.  I've used them as short delays on tracks.  Puts things in a cool space.

I have the feeling that I have more experience in my little finger than you do in your whole body about audio electronics..

I realize that this thread seems to have died a natural death, but I just picked up one of these old contraptions -- or at least most of one; it's missing the tubing and the microphone and speaker fittings.  Otherwise, it looks very good.  I'm going to bring it up on the Variac.

I'd love to hear from anyone about what the missing parts were like.  Would any little lavalier microphone work OK?  What kind of speaker or driver would work best?  As for the tubing -- would something like a coiled garden hose work?  Any info at all about the Xophonic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks --

Robert
