DELETE THIS... Setup on Spiderland?
« on: December 16, 2005, 05:33:33 AM »

Hi Steve, congratulations on the new forum.

I don't usually post over this side of PSW, but I've been wondering for the longest time what kind of setup was in place for Slint's "Spiderland".

Mics, positioning, did they track at once, all that stuff. Boring, but one of my band's songs draws somewhat from a few of the songs on this CD, and we're looking at recording sometime soon - I think it'd be good if we could somehow pay homage to this record.

I'd appreciate any info, and that's not just from Steve - if anyone else happens to know anything about this session, feel free to chip in.

(Edited the post for poor wording.)

OK.

So I seem to have been rather mistaken - I was always under the impression that Steve was involved with Spiderland, as producer or something.

Quote:

But they certainly made a much better record without me.

But then elsewhere on the net:
Quote:

If Brian McMahon has a peer as alternative rock`s most innovative guitarist it would have to be Steve Albini, who just happens to be the producer on SPIDERLAND.

So you can understand my confusion?

Info on Tweez greatly appreciated Wink

Jeebus:

Quote:

Since he recorded the Pixies' Surfer Rosa in 1988, his services have been desired by many, which led to Albini recording several of the defining albums of the 1990s: Slint's Spiderland, Nirvana's In Utero, P.J. Harvey's Rid of Me, and discs by the Breeders, Urge Overkill and the Jesus Lizard, among others.

From an article about TapeOpCon 2005...

Now I'm just curious to know who's talking outta their arse and who's not - I mean, the Albini quote in my last post is pretty hard to argue with, but if that's true, then how did so much misinformation about this album get out there??

it's a common mistake, though i don't know why since it says Brian Paulson right on the record..

there was a Slint article in a recent issue of Punk Planet. it talked about steve recording with the jesus lizard down the street and they'd drop in on each other's session occasionally. there wasn't any tech info, but it said the record was done over the course of 2 weekends and completely live except vocals.

Albini recorded an earlier Slint record titled "Tweez." This may explain the confusion somewhat.

Brian Paulson did indeed produce the "Spiderland" recording.

Slint staged something of a "comeback tour" earlier this year (or last??), and did a gig in NYC as a part of that tour, which explains why I recall any of this.
