Altec 438 A Meter Doesnt Zero
« on: December 15, 2005, 12:40:58 PM »

Just  finished recapping and fixing up my Altec 438A mic pre comp. Its running real nice but upon startup the meter doesn't quite hit zero. It always comes to rest and reads about 2 dB compression, even with no signal present. It was pretty beat when I bought it so I never tried to run it before. It looked as though it had been sitting in a garage for about 20 years. Otherwise the meter works fine and reads compression when signal is applied. The screw on the front of the meter doesn't do much so I left it in its original position. I have some mod info to install a zero adjust pot. Would this work? Other than that this thing is running smooth, much lower noise than I thought it would be and even the gain pot isn't scratchy.

Any help appreciated, thanx in advance, bab.
