I have an NT3 and don't care for it much. I'm not a pro or anything, just a home studio guy and compared to my Oktava MK012's and 414B-ULS, it sounds thin and bright.

Different patterns, different built-in freq curves,  different design intentions for all three.  Use the right mic for the job at hand.

What pre are you putting these into?

The mics I compared it to all sound different and my testing is far from scientific, just A/B-ing the mics I have in a given situation. I was using the 012 and 414 as a reference point.

What applications do you recommend for the NT3? I haven't had much success on drum oh, toms, and acoustic guitar. The only thing I've sort of liked it on is electric guitar. I'd love to get more use out of it.

Remember that this mic has a narrow hypercardiod pattern, and is voiced brighter than some other mics.  I've had good success with it on things like (as mentioned before here) a hand drum which was being used as a "bass" drum, where I wanted to reject as much ambient sound from the percussion kit as possible, while "gathering" the hand slap sound with presence.  Neither the 012 nor the 414 would have done exactly what I wanted on this instrument ("head" side, not the "hole" end).

But I would never use the 3 as a general overhead, whereas either the 12 or 414 would have worked in that situation.

I also used the 3 this past week successfully on things like hi-hat draped with "shakey things" and "bead-ey things," again to capture a bright sound from the midst of a swirl of percussion and drums.

Again, pick your microphone for the task at hand, and use it according to its design intention.

On acoustic guitar putting it a few inches back from the soundhole - and then angle it from that position, towards the bridge... that's the best sound I got out of it when I was quickly messing around with it the other day.

And if the mic/combination doesn't work for your needs, try to file that information away for some later time, when that combination may be perfect for a particular sound.  Shitty can also be useful.

I also found it very useful on hi-hats, and on snares (these were not your normal rock snares, but more melodious and full ranged, thus benefitting from the snap on the highs).

How would it go on a rock snare, do you think? Maybe alongside a 57, or used as the undersnare mic?

Brendan please let me know how it sounds when you get to try it out on a snare!

Cheers

i own an nt3, it comes in handy
love it as a snare mic on more controlled drummers, the sound of the hat bleed can suck though,
but it makes the snare sound awesome.

is ok on vox, bright but not as silent as you'd think.
very rarely use it on vox, next to never really.

is good on hand percussion, good "slap"
that's about it

with a good drummer, it's my go to snare mic.
