i'm having trouble to get some decent ribbons specialy for the Melodium's 42b (... i've made some by myself , but more infos and maybe adresses will help me a lot ... if anyone here is using (and loving !) ribbon mics i'll be very pleased to get any additionnal info !
regards
What ribbon foil have you been using? What is wrong with them?
I can maybe give you some advice. I've re-ribboned various types of microphones.

Does anyone have any experience with the new Coles 4040?
It has received some very glowing reviews.
The specs seem impressive (notably, a greater high frequency extension than the 4038).
It looks nice.
Has anyone here used it?

thanks to everybody for the usefull links ! I'll try Mr Sank's services for my Melodium i think ... did anyone tried his B&O with 44 ribbon mod ? ... For my home made ribbons i use the metallic foil of cigarettes boxes after burning the attached paper sheet ... sounds weird but after "swirling" the profile with a home made tool i reached great results ! I'm not unhappy with this method ... i just think that a specialist will certainly achieve better results ! I just do this because it was the only way for me at this time to get them repaired ! The tensioning is also made with my "noze" (and a bit of good sense too !) ... and the repaired mics sounded as good (if not better in the lustraphone's case ...) than the "untouched" ones ... i will be very pleased to exchange experiences with other members on this topic .... but maybe we are not in the right forum in this case ? My fault ... i just thought that steve's forum would be full of ribbon mics junkies !! And i just saw that Steve didn't even post any reply for this topic ... sob !

The tubes on the Radio France micpre's are 2 x EF86, and you need to connect the line amp ( 1 x ef86 and 1 el84 ! Yes you can make great 3W amps with them !) to get a line level output ... the rack is ready to drive 2 x Neumann U67 (tube power supply on the left for Ac701k mics) The Mic pre has no gain control as it is on the line amp ... the three switches engage passive eq presets (low cut, mid and high boost usefull with the 42b's!)made by huge high quality selfs (visible on the pics) I of course have all schematics if interested ... I have lot of different tube mic pres from same Constructor/era with slightly different designs (all with ef86 , some with 6au6 on output ...)
and a wonderfull tube console also ...
All those designs were lately (mid/end 60's) "upgraded" to class A solid state i also own and that can be compared to same era Neve designs (power transistor on output) One of the greatests sounds i've heard on pre's ! Here are some pics :
And here are pics of my "colourbox" in situ !
if you want some pics of the Melodium 42b ... let me know
What are those little white modules with the green lights? Thanks.
