If you hand out a demo cd to prospective clients/etc...

Do you include mastered version of songs or not?

Why/why not?

I would say that you should put your best foot forward, so unless you think the mastered versions are bad, put those out there.

i'd say to not use the mastered versions, however......bands don't understand what that means exactly.  they don't get that your demo is quieter becasue it's not mastered.

if you choose to hand out demos you are choosing to make your first impression right then.  you will not get a second shot at showing the bands you are serious about what you are doing.

on that note, i'm getting a demo together right now, and i'm having it mastered.

so there you have it.

Of my work, I usually use the mastered mixes right from the releases they are on when I make 'samplers' to hand out in bulk.

If it's a band I am really trying to get a big deal project with I will just give them copies of records I have done that I think the band would like.   Nothing sells you better than when a band sees a finished product from another band that looks sharp, sounds sweet and has that 'this should be on the shelf at best buy' feel to it.

Bands are always motivated more by the end product.   Give them finished product that they can see, feel, touch and experience.   It eliminates the need for trying to educate all the bands in my town about what mastering is and why the mixes aren't 'loud enough'.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

In my case I was thinking about using stuff where I had access to un-mastered versions (those I tracked/mixed or just mixed) and some that I only have mastered versions of (tracking only, or drums only).

So I'd have a mix of stuff unless I went with the mastered versions.

However I feel like handing out mastered versions is like "cheating".

I wish I could hand out CD's. I usually only get 1, most ever was 3.

you aren't cheating.....

master the thing and play ball like we all do.  it's how it is, most likely won't ever change.
