Ok, has anyone found some good switches and good replacement transformers yet?

If so, would you share the part supplier, part number or model, and the estimated price?

A brief description of why a particular replacement transformer is a good choice would also be helpful.

Thanks Smile

We've been kicking it around at the shop but it ain't gonna be cheap (partswise) and i'm a little scared of the drastic jumps in gain we'd be seeing between tran and no tran...

Maybe a small germanium circuit could be cool too.

I think the biggest obstacle for me is the fact that this experiment could be 200-300 dollars in parts before it was complete.

That may be true, but would not such a trafo project box also come in handy for other things too...say...other mics...

Sure it would, maybe. But the difference, if cost were $400, would not be worth it, because you are then about half-way to an API module.

Please, don't start speculating here. I can guarantee we might find a special match, but nothing that is going to change music.

Some preamps already have a transformer (switchable) on the input. I already know what the Jensen does to a POSM57.

Do tell Smile

Does the Jensen produce its own energy like stars do?

Miles, are you using a John Hardy pre or is it something else with a Jensen Transformer?

Still, I wonder if such a Transformer "Colour Box" might be a nice little project...as
it might be another cool tool to have around...

Ok, so people have mentioned re-using the original POS X-frmr as well as Sowter, Jensen, Lundahl and Cine-Mag, do we have other potential candidates?

Stars get their energy from Jensen transformers.

It adds unsurpassed warmth, transparency, and musicality.  Rolling Eyes

It obviously bumps the gain up considerably. If you click it in, and degain the pre, it adds 'sometimes' great *stuff*, never crap, not always what you expected, or are looking for.

It's like a fat swtich on a guitar amp, and some signals sound fatter with it off.

As some may have noted in Klaus' Forum, Oliver at TAB-Funkenwerk/AMI is now making (possibly because of the interest generated by this very thread!) ultra-high quality replacement transformers for the 57/58 series.   They drop in the body as an exact fit replacement.

He is sending me a couple to test, so I will report soon.

JJ Blair has a couple also, and has already posted some sound samples on Klaus' place.

BTW, Oliver says that the trans should not be remote mounted, if at all possible.  It should be as close to the capsule/body as possible.  So the remote box may not be such a good idea as we all thought.

More soon!

Cool, I'm glad to see this thread resurface. Since this posting, "Ugly Red Bastard" (as I've affectionately named him) has taken a permanent position as my resident snare bottom mic.
And he works wonderfully in that regard, giving me exactly what I want from the bottom of the snare.

It's a neat modification, just be aware that a '57 will no longer be a '57 once you have performed this mod. It won't sound the same, and it won't give you the sounds that you usually use a '57 for. It becomes a different mic, but still a good mic, and pretty useful.

Hi Terry,

slightly OT, but are those Rode inline amps fairly neutral sounding an quiet?
Just wondering if they might also be a quick fix for a ribbon on a low gain preamp..
