Oh boy...now we may need more switches for more transformers...

Maybe there will be the need for one really good switch...

You know, I'll bet such a Transformer Project Box could come in handy for other mic experiments...heh...heh....

Surely, there must be some Rocket Surgeons or brilliant and smart people here who could design such a box...and share the design layout and build details with others...

Easy, you just need an expensive multi-switch, and a pile of expensive transformers! 5 enough?

What color should it be painted? I am thinking.. blue..

Color of the transformer box should match the color of the mic.

Duh.

Trent Reznor probably already has this thing, and I'll bet it's not even in a case, or soldered.

I painted my mic body primer grey...so that means the Transformer Project Box should also be painted primer grey in my case...heh heh

I've been playing around with the modded 57, and I think the loss of transformer has made the mic less of a general purpose mic.

to get the mic to be general-purpose again you'd have to put a passive filter in series with the output to tame the high end, and low-end proximity effect.

the cheap transformer cuts the bottom off, and distorts it so that you can still hear the harmonics.

it also has a natural roll-off because of the way it's wound which does a high-end cutoff kind of thing.

you can always place the transformer in a box, and put a switch in there to put it in and out of the signal path.

you could also do an H-type high frequency filter with a couple of resistors and a film cap... to tame the high end.

Oh boy, resistor networks...film caps...maybe inductors...or maybe ??? ... and more things to think about putting in the Transformer Project Box...

I think I may need some really brainy people to help a dumb guy like me who is in the slow class figure out what kinds of cool things we can do in the Transformer Project Box...

I wonder if this Transfomer Project Box could wind up being Soooo Good that it would justify a small run of some printed circuit boards...heh...heh

i was actually thinking of the 545

i've always thought a sm7 would sound good on my voice

it sounds like your mod may be a suitable alternative (and, for now, at least, an unusual one)

What you're talking about is much more likely to just need switches and wire rather than PC boards.

If Divide by zero wants I'll donate a 57 to the cause and put up some green to make the transformer switching box once we suss out the "top three" candidates. Terry's assistant already nailed one down (maybe two).

Hmmm.

How many transformers in an SM2?

(and what are all these wires for?)

No voltage present, so it's all good.

Ok, has anyone found some good switches and good replacement transformers yet?

If so, would you share the part supplier, part number or model, and the estimated price?

A brief description of why a particular replacement transformer is a good choice would also be helpful.

Thanks Smile
