I guess the real question is how successful do the artists want to be? They won't sell a million copies of its current incarnation, since mainstream US doesn't buy the messy stuff.

first of all, i'm not sure why anyone would bother with an 'indie rock' forum if they felt like 'success' was defined by popularity. i'm sure 99% of people out there haven't heard of most of the records that have changed my friggin' life, but big deal.. i'm sure other posters here relate.

also, there's a great Albini quote somewhere where he says "used bins are full of note-for-note perfect sounding records". if there was a formula for guaranteed mainstream acceptance, everyone would use it all the time making hit after hit. i think it's funny seeing friends at work (who could be considered a 'mainstream' audience) going to Best Buy to spend $17 on Nirvana or Sublime demos (or White Stripes albums) when there's a sea of 'perfect production' shit floating out there.

so, we've had brian and brad comment, now all we need is greg norman and the production team will be complete.

how many records have you ever heard like this that were completely done by only three people.  that's impressive.

The circle is now complete.
I get blown away when he comes in to record.  Brian sets up his drums, we get sounds, then pounds out the songs a capella.  He must have an inplant of some sort.  From a recording stand point, it's refreshing to have a guy come in knowing exactly what he wants and just record him getting it.  In addition to that, RRoT has the benifit of no hi-hat!  I don't know how the hi-hat, no hi-hat factor fits in with the genre discussion.  I would call it: post punk/alt poptry/electronica-wave-noise-indy/emoist-krunk metal, with a whisp of pre space-surf/dyneminimalism, and capital-garage/rumsfeldica.  However, I get mixed up on these sometimes.
Hopefully he'll get a band that can play this stuff live.

you mean, like, the bitter tears? (hi greg!)

drummer tryouts suuuuck, but yeah, i imagine this stuff will start to take shape within the next 2 years. basically, if one can count along with it, play agressively, and not expect to make much money.. they're in.

well there is no doubt that I am fighting an uphill battle in this part of the PSW.  I am not a big fan of independent music as an art form.  But I like pop music and while I am sure that is sacrelidge around these parts, it is what works for me and sells a lot of vinyl.  The whore of the industry.  So, anyway, what I hear in this record is a potential.  Give it to a bunch of yahoos and it will tank into your happy realm.   Give it to a pop producer and it could go into the hepititus-infested world I live in.

Anyway, barring any smartass responses, I will give you back your indy peninsula.

you can like or not like whatever you want, your opinion and taste in music and production are as valid as anyone elses.

the only problem is that your developing a slight disdain for what it is we all believe in around here.  most of the people in this forum not only LOVE indie rock as an artform and an extension of their lives (sometime it IS their life) we also have no ambition to sell 50 million records.

to it's own detriment, RRoT (and many, many other bands) are creating art for the sole sake of self enjoyment, exploration, fullfillment, and for the sake of the art itself.  as over indulgent as that may seem, it's what we do, and it's what we want to do......and it's what we love.

would anyone of us take commercial sucess?  you bet we would.

would we compromise our control and creative direction for said commercial sucess?  i highly doubt it.

the underground rock scene is all about fans coming to you, not about you going to the fans.

sorry my last post was way too harsh...must have been a bad day.  anyway, i have no problem with people doing what makes them happy.  I tend to think in terms of sonic pop gorgeousness exclusively.  Just my own shortcoming, since it is truly difficult for me to listen to sonically earthy stuff, and hence why I am not a indy guy.  People going to the artist...a noble thing to seek.

I never said anthing about creative control going away.  You may be right to assume that would happen in most cases, but there have been exceptions.

if anyone's interested, i uploaded a 'new' song to the myspace page. the song's actually a couple of years old, but i remixed it a week ago because i was never thrilled with the original. it's called "i am a magnet" and i'll probably upload another song later in the week.

Wow!  I'm so psyched Brian's getting a little more recognition.  This shit is in my top 3 favorite recordings I've worked on.  Seriously, the first day was just a huge "mess" of drums that I couldn't follow but I knew there was an idea.  When we got 2 guitar tracks done, WHEW!  That's when I got blown away.

It was all done on our 3M M56 using GP9 which I hit pretty hard throughout.  I never liked hitting GP9 hard but with this stuff I felt like the high end distortion on the guitars only made it all the more gnarly.  I used our Ampex 440 modules for the guitar pres.  They rule.

This is some of the most complicated/loud yet completely accessible music I've heard.  I really hope you can find a suitable drummer some day Brian.  Lata,

Josh

good to see you here Josh! i too was stoked about the guitars we recorded; that extra bitey distortion makes it sort of sound like vinyl playback. why Ampex recorder electronics sound so cool for guitar i'll never know..

to others reading, this is the record J. was referring to:
