Title: Who do you use for tape deck head relapping or replacement?
Post by: Thomas W. Bethel on November 22, 2015, 08:11:58 AM
I have two Otari MTR-10 tape decks I am working on for a client. On one of the decks the heads are in bad shape with the playback head being down -12 dBU at 15 KHz at 15 ips. The other deck checks out fine. I am wondering who you use for tape head maintenance and possible replacement. Thanks in advance.

Not many players in that game these days. John French would be my first call.

It may be cheaper to find another machine for parts than to source new heads.

I never got a reply from Otari about a replacement head.

I did send the heads to JFR for an evaluation.

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.

I just got the head stack back from JFR and they did a fantastic job on it. They were able to find a good Otari playback head and replaced the bad one in the head stack. I got a chance to talk to John and what an amazing person. Thanks for all the help on finding someone so good. I will be using John again in the near future.
