Title: Vintage Gefell 692's - Decision to convert to Phantom ?
Post by: Deuce 225 on May 08, 2017, 05:24:46 PM
Hi all,
I thought I'd see what thoughts any of you may have regarding a decision I need to make. I have a pair of vintage Gefell 692's that I need to send to Gefell for service.  The nice person at Gefell emailed me with some ala cart pricing for typical repairs/capsule replacements. She also said they offer a phantom power conversion modification which I could elect to have performed at the same time our mics are being serviced.  I know there are two obvious PROS to leaving them as is (vintage design preserved and no cost incurred for mods).  The big PROS for performing the phantom mod are that it streamlines setup for tracking and reduces clutter.

Am I missing something in my decision criteria?  Thanks in advance.

I recommend doing it for the same reason I'd recommend changing a classic car with a generator and 6v electrical system to an alternator and 12v electrical system in the course of restoration.

It's much more practical, will not adversely impact performance, and you're already "under the hood" working. I don't think you'd ever regret it. We have a few pairs at our place that the mod has been done to.

I don't think the originality is a major concern with these mics-- even the most valuable microphones are foremost tools that get used (unlike some other musical instruments, whose collectible value can sometimes outstrip their utility value). They will be more useful and practical after the modification.
