Title: Telefunken AC701k: Fake Tube?
Post by: zerofly on April 19, 2017, 06:52:28 AM
Hello Klaus, good people,

I have stumbled upon these tubes at a fair price, but, they look a little weird in aspect compared to what i'm used to.
They are clear, not black and the logo is horizontal.
i have attached some pictures.

Can these be fake? real?
Please!

many thanks.

Without intention to brag, I've seen thousands, but never seen one like this.
Plus: "attractive price? No, I would not buy it.

Hello Klaus,
Yes, your probably the person who has seen more of these tubes.

Yap, sounds like rip off, i'm not going for it.

plus, when i contacted the seller regarding the aspect of the tubes i got this:

As far as I confirmed this item is unused however the supplier bought it
which made in the former East Germany 30 years ago in USA .
It would be compatible with AC701 K which made in West Germany.
We will be cover the warranty for bad tubes.
Please consider it.

Any truth in this?

thank you very much for the help!!
Kind regards,
Pedro

That seller's statement flies smack in the face of the stamped declaration of "Made In Western Germany"!

Very interesting. Could these be older fakes/counterfeits? I wonder if the seller is willfully operating in bad faith, or whether they may have been a victim of misrepresentation themselves.

The East German, state-owned, RFT company made a tube like the AC701 that was used in Neumann/Gefell's pencil and stereo tube mics. That tube was called "AC761", and looked almost identical to the AC701 made by Telefunken in Ulm, West-Germany. But this tube, nominally with the same specs as the AC701, was often noisy from the start and those that were not, usually became unreliable in the long run.

It it possible that someone got ahold of a bunch of these, relabeled them and the packages they came in, and put them on the market, at a time when it was much easier to fool customers with fakery than it is now.

The shape matches the AC761, even if so, allways noisy isnīt a candidate!
