What Kind Of C12-Clone Am I Buying?
« on: February 27, 2011, 03:50:14 pm »

Hi guys, can you provide any information on this mic, the body shell had no AKG Logo on it, but everything internally looks to be original. The T14/1 is there, the cable set and power supply is all AKG original, just not exactly sure, probably a Wunder if I'm to guess.
Thanks

Looks to me it resembles a Pape C12 clone, though not entirely.

There are several threads about this mic in the old mic lab, and with the patience of a few days, you will be able to read all the details about that German-made C12 copy there.

Klaus, did Pape's have T14/1s?  I have only seen them with Henry style transformers.

Klaus, did Pape's have T14/1s?  I have only seen them with Henry style transformers.

I worked on most of the ones that were imported to the U.S. and many did indeed have non-T14/1 transformers (they were 5743, as used in "The Tube") Yet, some early ones did have genuine Haufe-made T14/1.

If there were a shot of the housing tube, things would be more clear what this actually is. But I see many parts that were used in original C12: coupling cap, several resistors, capacitors... A close -up of the capsule would also be telling (Pape never used clear-backplate CK12, only the Golden Gate C414 versions, so the capsule is another item that makes the mic's provenance still a bit mysterious.)

Here's the shell, not the best photo and the cable with the green jewel
Thanks for all the help

first glitch of the new software: the image that was inserted was huge and  in the process of reducing it in size  it disappeared! Sorry. K.H.

Dare I say, it looks like a FLEA body.

AKG has replied and stated all original vintage parts except the pattern switch box. Apparently Rinus Meijer, a highly qualified technician, mic collector hand built it.  :-\Does anyone have contact information of Rinus in Holland?, I’d appreciate speaking with him sometime.
Best Regards

It certainly looks like a C12 copy that comes close to the real thing (though the transformer and some resistors are not "original vintage" parts, as claimed.)

I still think it's a FLEA, especially because of the 50/200 board.  On most AKGs, they are brown.  The FLEA ones are black.

Also, that is not an original Haufe T14/1.

that is not an original Haufe T14/1.

Your statement should be supported by a detail or two: why not?

To me the transformer looks perfectly stock (though, as I mentioned, of later or recent vintage) and identical to several I bought directly from Haufe, a few years back.
Besides, who would go through the trouble and reverse-engineer a transformer which is readily available at reasonable cost from the original manufacturer?

Klaus, by "original," I meant "one that would be found originally in a vintage C12."

J.J.,
Upon further study I now realise you did not question the originality of the transformer as a genuine Haufe T14/1 but just whether this particular version shown in the photo of the C12-copy would ever have been in a real C12, during the years that mic was made.  The answer is NO. This version of T14/1 was made much later.

Klaus had a good close-up look at the capsule and confirmed it's an original CK12 capsule circa early to mid 60's.
Thanks

Ken,
I trust that you, as a person who trades recording mics, will play by the forum's ground rules and not use this information, should you decide to sell the mic?
