Mice woo in ultrasound !
« on: November 04, 2005, 04:10:02 PM »

Well apparently mice sing in ultrasound so I will find a use for my ultrasonic microphones, recording romantic rodents !

New scientist article :

Quote:

Mouse songs are sung at ultrasonic frequencies, which is why no one has noticed their complexity before, nor indeed been moved to celebrate the tunes in romantic poetry

There has been a rash of mice jokes on the recording newsgroups the past couple of days, due to the new research being publicized.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were a lot of animals or even most of the small rodent sized ones, that communicate with ultrafrequencies, or large animals that communicate with infrafrequencies.

Well I, for one, intend to write such celebratory romantic poetry, extolling the pastoral accomplishments of our rodentary brethren.

Stay tuned...

Elephants do indeed communicate infra-sonically. I've read that this same behavior is now suspected of other pachyderms and whales.

No doubt Paul.

On a related note, I was watching Discovery channel awhile back and saw a segment about the sound channel in the Earth's oceans. Supposedly there is a layer of water where sound travels farther. They were saying whales are congregating at that level and singing songs to each other with over 1,000 miles distance between them.

Even the whales know, that it all starts with proper mic placement.  Smile
