I currently use Audacity to record speeches and sermons to my computer via a mixer. I find that the files are huge. For example, a 104 minute sermon was approximately 5gb. I recorded the Audacity file using Microsoft Plus! Analog Recorder and the entire file size was only 58mb. What is the difference. Are there any settings that I should change in Audacity.

I must admit that I am fairly new to digital recording, and don't know much about sample rates and other settings.

Also, I know that eventually I will have to stop using nickle and dime software. (No offense to Audacity). Are there any suggestions for a good all in one programs.

what sample rate and bit depth are you working in?

that will have a big impact on the total file size.

Make sure you go into Audacity's preferences under the quality tab  and set the default sample rate to 44.1 and bit depth to 16 bit. I think it defaults to 32 bit floating point.

You can also set a preference for mono under the Audio I/O tab in the recorder section.

That should keep your file size down.

There is nothing wrong with Audacity by the way, if you don't need advanced features.
