Starting first studio, need help on equip. choices..
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:09:25 PM »

I'm going to be focused more on local rock bands. So I know I need some room. What i don't know, is what I should use to get a pretty good sounding recording. I have a shot at getting a mackie D8B for a low price, but is it worth it? what else would I need? I've also heard a lot about DAW's and using protools is the way to go. Is that so? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It's all about the money.. *sing*

write down your budget and the guys here will/can help you!

Keep in mind that a Full HD-stack of protools costs about the same as a Rolls Royce Phantom..

I'll assume you're like most of us an on a budget.  You're right about the room.  Invest some time and elbow grease into finding out what makes a room sound good (acoustic treatment), and spend some time putting a cool vibe in there (rugs, budda statues, whatever).  Don't skimp on vibe cause it's way more important than anything else.  Your clients will feel good, they'll perform well, they'll be happy with your recordings, associate your place with good results, tell their friends, and come back for more.  PT LE is a pretty good bargain, and the Control 24 has 16 mic amps in it.  All you need aside from that is a handful of Sm57's, Sm7's, 414's, D112, U87, and km84 (184) and you're set.  You've got Pro Tools and a list of mics people like to see in a studio.  Hope this helps.

Like robert said, make the room right and the gear will fall into place. No amount of gear can help a crappy room.

My first response was going to be: RUUUUUNNNNNNNN! Don't do it!

Totally agree on the room advice, do not start without considering where you AC is gonna be either.

www.johnlsayers.com

This site is invaluable for beginners.

Also maybe F. Alton Everest's book on acoustics.

It may seem like heavy sledding but it is great when the things you read about start to take root and you hear your first resonator resonating and you actually know what is going on!

Do you know if you will have a separate control room, or have you given it that much thought?

Most guys that post here are way more experienced than I am but if I had to start from scratch I would get the best analog console I could afford with at least 32 channels.  A PC or MAC and a 16 track 2" tape machine.

Then I would call Mercenary Audio and order:
Nuendo
Adam S-3A's w/Sub1
KSP-8
Cranesong Spider
A pair of Distressors
A pair of Benchmark DAC-1's
Massive Passive
A good two buss comp....
A selection of Mics mentioned above to include Royer and the numerous models discussed in wonderful detail here.
plus anything else you can get your hands on.
And then I would go to a Michael Wagener workshop and jump two years ahead in expertise if I were a beginner.

IF your budget does not allow that then...
Computer
Nuendo
DAC-1
Adam S-3A's

And you would be off on an adventure....

Or you could find a studio to work at and find out if you even want to do this.

Hope this inspires debate...good luck brough

Make sure you snag his Master Handbook on acoustics.  Some of his other books are specialized for this room or that room and don't cover all the concepts.  I've found the Master Handbook to be the most useful.

I want to be polite and answer your question, the above shite was just tongue and cheek...mostly.

I am not the one to ask about this shit....but since Bob Clearmountain didn't jump in here....

If you are asking because you really want to know, just read as much as you can here as it is a great place to start.

But working with a 16 channel board and a four track will be just as good.

It's all about getting to work.  There are some really great posts here about mic placement and using basic tools.

Maybe you could even volunteer at a local studio.

There are numerous threads here on consoles and the only thing you really need is dedication.

Good luck

P.S. everyone needs cranesong if for nothing else because the green knobs are cooler than anything in the world.

nice, anyone here have experience with the new Tonelux Modular line? they are reasonable priced and i hear they have "big-console"-like quality.

http://www.tonelux.com/config.html

i did a search for ToneLux here on r/e/p and not much came up. just a couple posts from paul wollf himself but no good reviews from users.

i mean.. i know WHY he needs that stuff... id just like to hear some recommendations for mixers basically.

ps yes the green knobs just call out to you "TWIST ME, TWIST ME"

1.  Twist knobs only as a last resort.

2.  Tonelux is good.

Why does everyone always forget cables!

Without cables the room doesn't even matter Smile

The biggest studio designed by the best designer filled with the best gear is worthless without cables!

Budget at least $150 for every 8 channels just for HOSA brand stuff.

Peace,
Dennis
