Tube mics to try
« on: April 15, 2005, 08:16:46 PM »

Hi,

I would like some advice on what tube mics I should try.  I will be recording lead male vocals, some lead female, and acoustic guitar (finger-style and rhythm).  Vocals will be soft rock/ pop style.

Try to keep it under $3500 if possible.

I have a soundelux 47 on the way from Mercenary but I'm not so sure that it will work so well on guitar.

Thanks,

Brian

Among new tube microphones, you might try (in no particular order):
1. Lawson 251
2. Brauner Valvet
3. Brauner VM1A

I am sure if you dig through the threads here you'll find a zillion discussions about tube mikes (and yes, there are exactly a zillion.  I know because I counted them).

Give a listen to the B.L.U.E. Bottle, which is extremely versatile since there are 8 different capsules available for it, each with its own distinct characteristics, so you get a lot of bang for the buck. New they sell for over $4k, but you can find them used around $3k, give or take. I find the Bottle and the extra capsules to be well worth the money. If you can't afford the Bottle or prefer to buy new rather than used, you might want to try out the B.L.U.E. Cactus as well.

And, yes, read through these threads. There's lots of info for you here.

Cheers,

Brian,

You mentioned that you have an E47 coming to you from Mercenary.  I would love to know what you think about that mic (you mentioned that you had reservations about how it would sound on acoustic guitar).  Please share your thoughts once you've formulated them!

Thanks in advance,
