randomizing mix results
« on: March 19, 2005, 07:45:05 PM »

assume program material with duration x

randomly cut the material into y number of fragments with z durations
(be able to set the range for possible return values of y and z)

arrange the fragments in random order on a timeline with duration xa
(be able to set the range of xa from x to ?, in effect, adding silent regions)

1) does any known plug-in or program do this?
2) can anyone suggest relevant urls, contacts, etc.?

thanks in advance

after checking out a few options, i think i'm gonna have to make this software

a few questions:

a) would it be feasible to learn how to program this app in osx?
if so, where should i start?
b) if not, would it be prohibitively expensive to pay someone to do it?
if not, who should i contact?

for instance, maybe it would be possible to work with a graduate student at a university - or maybe i should try to contact the people who work with xenakis, boulez, etc.

again, thanks in advance

Why would you want to do this?  It seems like hiring a monkey to type and hoping for Shakespere.

thanks skytouch yeah i'm pretty sure max/msp can do it
but as i look at it seems like it should be a pro tools plug-in:

(as i was describing it to a max/msp programmer)

this would be a straight audio app with no midi involved

1) it would be good if it would do 8 tracks at a time
2) it would need to accept 24-bit audio files (44.1-192 if possible)
3) it would need to be sample-accurate
4) it would need to function without degrading audio quality or adding artifacts
5) it would hopefully function like this:

import files onto tracks 1-8
choose parameters for region cuts
(upper and lower limit of # of regions, upper and lower limit of region duration)
process region cuts (as a set of references to the parent files)
choose parameters for timeline remix
(new timeline duration, upper and lower limit of duration of silence between regions, option to allow regions to overlap)
process timeline remix (as a set of references to the parent files)
grouped multiple playlist functionality would give the opportunity to compare multiple mixes
save session
file output from selected playlist to disk

does this break any rules of how an rtas plug-in functions and/or interfaces with pro tools?
