Frequency-selective stereo to mono summing question
« on: January 23, 2005, 05:21:55 PM »

Hello everyone,
I have a small problem here, maybe someone here can help me with this...
Here's the deal, i have couple of songs with a bit too wide stareo image
in the low-end, probably because of stereo effects used on the bassline,
(it's chorus and reverb that comes with my Akai EB16 multieffect board).
I don't have the option to control those effect's send/return with eq,
so i just recorded it as it is into my DAW because it sounds good
this way, but later i'm going to cut this song to vinyl, that has
known limitations with the stereo width of low frequencies...

What i want to do, is to sum the whole song below about 350hz
to mono, and leave everything above this frequency in stereo.
But, i can't manage to find a way of doing this, please help...

Btw, i work with Mac G3 DAW in OS9 environment, and i use
Cubase 5.1 and Peak 2.6 software with Waves 3.2 VST plugins.

Any help will be very appreciated.

Thnks in advance,

Peace.

You're looking for an elliptical EQ, common in vinyl mastering houses. I've not tried this, but you may be able to create one in your DAW by duplicating the stereo mix below the original (so you have 2 stereo pairs lined up) and setting filters so the top tracks are say, 300Hz and up and the bottom two are 300Hz and below, then sum the bottom two channels to mono. Depending on the quality of the filters in your DAW, you may be able to pull this off flawlessly, though I imagine it will take some fooling with crossover points/slope to make it inaudible...

Clear as mud?

Thanks for stopping by Brad, I almost sent this your way.

It's not an easy fix but Brad pretty much summed up the method.
