Is this an authentic Neumann K67 capsule?
« on: December 17, 2017, 01:41:41 PM »

Hi.
Do you think this capsule is an authentic Neumann K67?
If so, does the appearance look good?

I'm looking for one for a Neumann U77 and this looks like a good candidate.

Thanks for each one of your collaborations!

The picture shows a genuine Neumann capsule in rather contaminated condition. But it cannot be judged from the picture whether it's a K67 or K87.

How do you determine a vintage k67 from a k87.  Im always looking at the screw holes and still haven't figured it out.

Nothing about screw holes. You can tell only by looking at a close-up photo of the backplate sandwich: is an aluminum spacer (ca. 40µ) separating the two backplate halves (= K67/870) or a plastic spacer of the same thickness (= K87)?

If you have the capsule in your physical possession, it's even easier to tell: unscrew one of the four screws that hold the two capsule halves together: if there is a clear plastic sleeve over the threads of the screws, it identifies a K87, if just a plain screw with no sleeve, it's a K67/870.

Klaus,
I think the OP perhaps found it a bit scary to do what at first glance might feel like taking a capsule apart.

It was only when I happened on a small stash of completely trashed k67 capsules that I figure out quite how they are put together and that the four bigger screws hold the two halves together (and that the smaller screws are best left completely untouched!)

I also figured out that if I was working on a possibly reparable example of the capsules that I would want a very steady hand!

In your estimation would a capsule in that state be restorable to full operation through cleaning?

Thanks, Mike, you have some good points.

I assumed that a close-up view of the backplate would be sufficient to determine the model of Jose's capsule.

I agree, removing one of the four big screws might seem scary to the novice, though no real damage to the capsule should ensue, unless you slip with your screwdriver, or get into a raging fit of frustration.

To you question: After removal of contamination of the kind seen on Jose's capsule, return to factory performance can be expected in most cases. But only professional cleaning, (professional underlined!) will leave the sputtering intact, and avoid introducing additional contamination which could infiltrate the space between diaphragms and backplates.
