M7 Capsule: Which Mics Use It?
« on: September 14, 2017, 09:40:29 AM »

Hi.
Firstly, to comment that I admire your knowledge, I am very happy that there are forums of this caliber.
Please excuse my English helped me by a translator, so it is possible that they read some incongruence, which of course, is not written on purpose.

My question is simple.

Are there any micróphone, or microphone heads that use "exactly" the same capsule M7 ,as the old Neumann U47?

I hope to know of his knowledge as a child expects a toy, that is to say with a tremendous amount of illusion :-)

Hello José,
Give my regards to your translator. It (I assume it's machine-based) did quite a lyrical job.

If I understand you correctly, you want to know whether there is currently an M7 capsule available that duplicates the sonic performance and splendor of an original Neumann PVC capsule.

The answer is: no. There is only one company that currently manufactures a dimensionally-close copy of that capsule, and with PVC diaphragms, like the originals: Thiersch in Germany.

But I have my issues with the product: It is too mid-range forward (some may call it congested or sibilant), lacks the original's speed and clarity of the upper octaves, and its overall reproduction of more complex sound waves is sluggish and opaque.

At this time, the best M7 alternative for those who would like the genuine Neumann sound for their U47, U48 and M49 is still the K47 Neumann product.

I'm glad to know that my translator is a good guy :-)
Thank you Klaus for bringing clarity to my doubts.
But I want to raise one more question.

I read that the UM70 head uses an M7

Would it be a good idea of this two options for you?

1- Search for a UM70 to extract the M7 and replace the capsule M7 of the U47
2-Find a vintage K67 around the world

3-Finding an M7 Gefell before 2000 (I read a message in the forum)

All agreed, except for #2. K67, old or new, do not belong in U47.

I wish not to be a cause of annoyance, but without their collaboration I am not able to distinguish this capsule.
I have the opportunity to buy ...
Sadly I only have 2 photos.
Looks like a real Neumann M7?

By the way ...
This is the old capsule that probably can not be revived.

The capsule in the first two pictures is not a genuine Neumann capsule, but most likely a Thiersch Blue Line (PVC diaphragms).

It cannot be determined from the photos whether this capsule is a new M7 copy capsule manufactured entirely from scratch, or whether new diaphragms were mounted on an original Neumann M7. Thiersch offers both services.

In either case, do not expect genuine Neumann sound from such a capsule.
