Essentially I'd like a plugin that can do all the common things you'd find in a full featured analog mastering console in one plugin.  L solo, R solo, independent L and R (or linked) +/- gain adjustments with a "bit transparent" option to move in -6.020599913279624 steps, L/R channel swap, L and R phase invert, mono button, M solo, S solo and a width knob/slider (gaining up or down "S").  I can accomplish all of those things currently but need to use a combination of like 2 or 3 plugins to do all of them.  It's a workflow thing more than anything else.  I think it'd be a cool plugin to have on your pitch track.

Maybe a little off topic. . .
Hove you seen the brainworx plugin bx_solo?  It's free and does a lot of the MS stuff you were talking of all in one plugin.  It doesn't do the bit transparent gain changes or single channel phase invert. . .

Nick,

Yep.  Between bx_solo, Flux Stereo Tool and Reaper I can do all of the things I outlined.  I still think it'd be cool to have one plugin that could do them all.

Cool.  Yeah, it would be cool to have those all in one.

Sounds like my Crookwood, only all in a plugin. Would be cool for working laptops "on the move" I guess. Maybe someone could custom make one for you?

Or for those of us who choose not to use a console or monitoring controller.

I always try to use:

2.71828

or

1.6180339

or

3.14159265

Agree with the second one which is my favorite. Oh, BTW, it's actually 1.6180339999999999......
(the 9 is infinitely repeating). It does make a difference you know. How'd you forget that...?

Sounds pretty Golden anyways...

Good to hear from you Jeff!

Yes Gregg, it's its huge, & packed with information, almost a digital audio bible.

I've highlighted many sections over the years.

Continue to go back to it as a resource.

Enjoy, best regards, JT

p.s. I must add a comment, that when I'm making level changes in digital audio, I admire the purity of going "by the numbers", but the ear, as always,  is really the judge!

just received my soft-back copy today, pleased to see it's about a third the size of the curtis roads text, but looks very good!

In Samplitude you don't have to type in an exact amount. There is a button to Normalize to 50%. When you click on that it displays -6.02 in the db window.

Did you check the normalized file with the bit meter (Bitter) ?

If I import the file as is, it reports the playback is 16-bits.
If I do any gain change whatsoever, the bit meter reports 32-bit float.

Yeah not exactly the same thing as you want to do. I see that you want to drop the level 6.02db (ie. bitshift) and then output that directly to the DAC.

I would be interested to know if Sox (a linux utility) can do this. It has a 'dcshift' function that can alter the amplitude by whatever you want. If not, Ruby or Perl could probably do this using a script. And that could be run on macs, pc's or linux.

I've not tested this plugin but I think it does the "Bit Pattern Transparency" thing.

Good find.  Yeah, that does bit transparent gain changes at the click of a button (confirmed using the Stillwell Audio Bitter bitscope plugin).  The price is right too ($15).

When I have time I'm going to do some listening tests of a bit transparent gain reduction of -6.02059991 vs. a 'regular' gain reduction of -6.02.
