Analog M-S x Digital M-S and other stuff
« on: March 20, 2012, 12:33:39 pm »

Hi,

I have been doing M-S inside Pro Tools HD environment for years employing plug-ins, in this case, mostly the Neon HR.

I have considered picking an analog M-S Matrix. So a few questions arise:

a) When you do analog M-S, generally is it the first process post d-a?

b) Do you prefer doing it at the last point of your analog chain? I understand that the analog M-S could improve the signal quality/sound since it is being sent to a good analog eq.

c) Do you prefer doing it digitally, for better /quicker recalls and tweakings?

I use an Ibis EQ for stereo treatment and have seriously considering another unit for the M-S analog stage.

d) Is the SPL M-S Matrix good enough ? I have read a thread considering the Dangerous S & M, Avenson, DAV SIPP and other more expensive boxes.

Opinions are greatly appreciated!

Oi Alécio,

tudo bem?

A few quick thoughts on your post.

a. Use M/S wherever you need it. It's rare that it's needed everywhere. I have an EQ that does M/S internally (Weiss) and a compressor as well (Manley). Aside from that it's easy to set something up in the DAW as needed.

b. Again, choose what process needs to be M/S, put it there. I don't see how analog M/S will improve the signal quality or sound. It's just a different way to manipulate 2 channels.

c. Digitally when I want to do something ITB, analog when I'm working outside the box. Recalls happen less and less frequently as your skills improve ;-)

d. I don't know of this unit, but if it's based on their 120v mastering series, the other things I've heard have been excellent.

Just my opinion, hope it helps!

Hey Alecio!

I've got M/S capable units on both ends of my chain when the need arises.

ITB: the Flux Epure II EQ does a nice job of internal M/S routing inside the chosen "pitching" DAW, PT HD in my case.

Pre DAC: the Z-Sys digital EQ also includes an M/S section for adjusting levels and EQs.

Analog Hardware: the Rupert Neve Master Bus Processor has a nice SFE (M/S) section for adjusting "width" and "depth" with level, EQ, or compression. It comes very last in my analog chain just before the ADC which feeds the "catching" DAW, Sonic soundBlade HD.

Today I applied a couple clicks of "width" level and/or HF EQ to a great "Americana" record with the Rupert MBP.

Which end of the chain I use M/S with depends on the application, if it's a repair/surgery on a questionable mix, I might use M/S ITB. If it's a simple "enhancement" I'll probably use the Neve.

Best Regards, JT

You need to visit Florianópolis. 43 beaches! Summer has been cool this time!
Today I am finisinhing  a couple of singles and will run to the beach with a few friends for sure!

December was a bit raining. January the city gets crowded by tourists, up to the Carnival on February.
