Which M7-Type Capsule for my U47 Clone?
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:59:35 AM »

I need an M7- type capsule for a U47 clone but I hesitate between "Dale" M7 and Thiersch Blue Line (PVC)

I don't have any experience with theses capsules, so I welcome opinions & advice.

First, some clarification (at least for me) is needed, as far as the Dale Ulan capsule version of an M7-style capsule goes. I read on a DIY forum this statement by a "Chuck D":

"Dale" M7 Capsule
After a year of R&D and mentoring from Dale Ulan I am happy to announce that I have the "Dale" M7 made entirely here in the USA. No China parts used. Machined here in Orange County CA, Sputtered in San Francisco CA and glued and tension-ed by me here in my garage.

The design went through a very lengthy process of R&D to get all the measurements exactly how Dale had them. Dale helped me greatly with the each step making sure every single detail was correct.

Is it that capsule you are referring to? If so, who is the seller? And what material is the plastic? Mylar or PVC? (most likely, the former)?

Your link points to an advertising page from the manufacturer. It clearly states that the cathedral pipes capsule uses a "6µ Mylar" diaphragm.

That capsule therefore is not comparable to either the original PVC M7 or any PVC copies, like Thiersch's, regardless how well or poorly executed.

By the way: looking at manufacturers' web ads does not give me or anyone else much of a clue as to the quality of the product. If someone has used that specific capsule with knowledge of original Neumann PVC M7 (or is willing to send me a loaner for a week to test) that would help.

I have been very happy with both of my Thiersch PVC M7's.  They are being used in [new] U47-inspired mics and, although those mics don't sound 100% like the U47's (actually, mostly U48's I think) I have used at Capitol, they are certainly very much 'cut from the same cloth'.  Recently, on a female vocal, a very experienced engineer friend chose to use one of my mics over one of the 47's--a good-sounding one.  Of course, YMMV.
