amplifier noises
« on: January 01, 2011, 08:10:01 PM »

I'm troubleshooting an old solid-state power amp whose biggest problem is a low-frequency "whooshing" noise. The noise is steady most of the time, but occasionally changes in amplitude and character.  Aside from the noises, the amp seems to work fine, but not sure how far it can be trusted. I am led to believe the amp did not always have these noises, but it has been deteriorating over time.  My first guesses are:

leaky electrolytic coupling capacitors
cold solder joints
leaky semiconductor junctions.

Anything else come to mind?

Change those old caps first.

While it could be anything on your list, I would be suspicious of a semiconductor junction, probably one in the input stage.
