Most work can be done yourself. First thing is to get to the clavinet web site, it has a boat load of info and parts like rubber hammer tips, strings, replacement pickups, etc.

I've also posted circuit mods there to improve the noise and fidelity of the preamps. Those mods were done to Stevie Wonder's D-6's as I have reworked all 4 of his.

they are not hard to work on, and one
common electro-mechanical problem at this
point is dirty switches.
got electro-lube? no? darn, Caig D-5 is ok then

and dig that yarn work in back of the bridge.
it's like that for good reason, and that does
make changing strings a little bit more of a
drag.

but a good experienced goin'thru by someone who
knows them is almost always a good call.

get to know that thing.
it's pretty simple.

and if you up grade the pickups, keep the originals.

repeat - keep the originals !

Those sites are great reading.  I always heard the Clav' as a plucked sound, like a muted harpsicord, but it is hammered.

My D6 arrived in Ohio yesterday and will go on the bench today.

No, you really want an old Mutron III. That's what Stevie used in the studio. His have been modified with quiet opamps and attack and release controls for the filter. He adjusts the attack time while popping some notes out before he plays. They used to go out on the road but they are kept in LA now. He uses a Roland filter live now.

The Clavinet is back.

I put a new 9volt in and ran it into the old bassman with a 2 x 12 greenback closed back cabinet.

Nice and quiet, all the internals have been redone, New strings,felt and one of the pickups was cracked so that was replaced. The pre was rebuilt and the whole instrument was insulated.
Funky funky funky.
Then I hooked up the wah.
Now I need someone to come and brutalise it.

D6 Clavinet + old Morley Wah pedal [the old chrome mains powered one]+ Fender amp = Funk heaven!

Jeff, I have a beautiful Rhodes Mark 1( http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/m/348793/17652/#m sg_348793 ) and the Hammond is finally home with a lovely new (new to me) Leslie. B3 needs a little more work but it is functioning, sounds absolutely gorgeous.
As for the piano, its just waiting for the pedals to go on and a proper tuning.
Too bad I cant play keyboard  but I am going to learn.
