Source for microphone boxes?
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:11:36 PM »

I have a few Neumann LDC's with no boxes, although they are very deserving of one-
I tried to order a box from Red mics for my 47, but they refunded the money, perhaps they are out of boxes or business-
I have seen the HE Studioteknik boxes , which resemble vintage Neumann boxes, but I can tell even from the pictures the tolex is a little plasticky looking, and these boxes are over $200..
Does anyone know of a source for great mic boxes that are reasonable and attractive?

Check Ebay.
There are several sellers with great boxes.

You can sometime see original boxes for your mic on ebay as well. Otherwise, maybe Neumann still make some for your model?

What about manufacturers who make clones of your mike?

Good news and bad news -- good news first, you can get the wooden boxes from TELEFUNKEN without a problem.  They are available for both long and short body microphones.  Bad news is they're $199- + shipping.

I designed some boxes for my Sage Bova Balls and had a friend, who is a joiner make them up for me from 12mm ply.

If you can get a friendly joiner or carpenter to help you out you could take that route.
Or, how about looking at good quality flight cases designed for electrical equipment?

I know a lot of people that use Peli (Pelican in the Sates) cases.
Sometimes camera cases can be easily adapted.

Inelegant, but the plastic cases that many "pro" hard drives come in can be converted to mic boxes. Glyph comes to mind.

Take out the hard foam they use and replace with softer foam. Use an electric carving knife to customise.  Thin layer on the bottom, thicker cut-out layer on top.

A Glyph case can hold two 87s easily, plus the shock mounts if you have them.

Check the site in the link below.  They carry what Terry was mentioning.  They come with the "pluck" foam that you can shape to your mic.

Here's a company I have gotten cases from; custom made to order if they don't already make what you want, amazingly affordable,  and US made.

Super link, Tim.
All of the Ebay vendors who sold the cherrywood cases for Neumann mics seem to have vanished as a previous poster has mentioned.

That one looks nice enough but is listed as discontinued by the manufacturer.
