Even Swap For U87's, Do It?
« on: October 01, 2009, 11:40:54 AM »

I know this has been beat to death original U87 vs U87ai pre Senn. and U87 after Senn.

I'll keep it simple so a Yes or No is all I need.

I have a 0 problem 1988 U87ai in 9 1/2 of 10 a great mic. I have someone who what's to swap even for his 1976 U87 that is so damn clean it's at least a 9 1/2 of 10, BUT I have not heard it.

Do I trade

Yes_____
No______

Knowing what I know, I would do it in a flash.

No comparison in my book.

Of course, you should listen to it to be sure YOU like it.

If both mics are trouble free and looking good, why on earth would he ask to trade?  It sounds mighty odd... Does he think newer is better?

Why is this same question posted in two forums?

I'd make sure that I got to hear the old '87 before doing the deal... but even if the capsule is shot it would seem like a damn good trade to me [never liked the 87A... obviously YMMV].

Peace.

If it's such a great deal for you, you must ask yourself why the other party is willing to trade.

Be cautious.

Yea I know it seems weird but I had hoped to get Fletcher's opinion here in his forum I did, thanks Fletcher, and I figured there would be more eyes on the other.
The advice has been great and what I needed on both so thanks to all.

The mystery is solved on the even trade and his email explanation is below.

"The reason I want an Ai is because of the extra edge around the 2k area. I find the vintage ones a little bit smoother with a tiny bit more air. Which is great for vocals but not room mics. And room mics is what I'm using U87s for.

All in all of course I'm talking about subtle differences. The difference between vintage units and new Ai's is not what people make it to be. They are much closer in sound than apart..."

So it looks like the trade is on and with 2 happy campers with the deal.

Thanks to all on your advice and when I receive it I'll repost my thoughts on this swap.

It is way better to get a variety of educated opinions than just mine.  One of the cool things about this set of forums is that the people that populate this forum actually [at least for the most part] know what the hell they're talking about.
