ZZTop Deguello w Terry/Bob Ludwig engineering...
« on: August 16, 2008, 03:16:59 PM »

Was just listening to Deguello (on vinyl) with my 10 yr old son: noticed Terry AND Bob Ludwig credited as engineers on that album. Did you share seats at points in time, or were you filling in for one another, Terry?

I love the sound of Cheap Sunglasses on vinyl. I also love that my 10 year old is into pulling out albums, sitting on the carpet in front of the stereo, and intently listening to everything from beginning to end.

Does that image remind any of you of something we too often miss in the current generation?  Rolling Eyes

Wow. That scenario is exactly how I discovered The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Yes, Cheech & Chong, Return to Forever, Frank Zappa, John Hartford, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, etc, etc...

Fond memories!

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you, Terry - How does one get those totally bone dry drums sounds? I absolutely love that sound and would really like to be able to get it myself.

Hey guys,

As for the credits:

The person in charge of ZZ Top at that time didn't fully understand the difference in "Engineering" and "Mastering."

I completely recorded and mixed the album, and then took it to NYC where Bob and I mastered it at Masterdisk.

As for "bone dry drum sounds," it helps to have a bone dry drummer, and some bone dry drums.  Microphones are good, but reverb might not help.

Yep, this is when I came in here as a fulltime member.

Bone-dry drums? Just put shag carpeting onto every floor, wall, or ceiling in a small room. Simple!

It's kinda as I expected: I thought Bob L was already well established as a mastering house: as always, never let the manager be the proof-reader!

BTW - sorry I didn't totally search/read thru all the other threads - not enough time (and a few too many kids!) to read everything!

thx Terry,
