(can't believe i'm starting a thread for) mic suggestions
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:08:48 AM »

.... i know we all see a mind boggling number of these threads and i now find myself starting one! go figure...

i'm looking for a pair of mics that i will use mostly for location recording... stereo work.. but can also be nice all-arounders for the studio (shakers/tambos/acoustic guits/etc etc). the more i research, the more i'm thinking that a pair of AKG 414 would be perfect, but i'd like to see what you all think in terms of other options... the mics should hit the following points:

1) M/S work: must have fig. 8 and card. patterns
2) should be on the smaller side... would be good if they were discrete - not  huge honkin things that an audience would be like: "WHAT THEY HELL ARE THOSE THINGS!!!??" when they are set up.
3) NO HUGE SPIDER SHOCKMOUNTS! damn i hate these things... why is it that every mic manufacturer thinks that including an enormous elaborate shockmount is necessary? (i.e. a mount like a 414 or those cup mount thingys that ADK A51s have are fine).
4) no separate power supplies (i.e. no tube mics). again - ease of setup is a must. the less junk i need to plug in and worry about the better

i think that's it....
well chime in if you have thoughts... thanks all!!

I have a matched pair of 414s for these situations, as you mentioned.  I also have a matched pair of Josephson C-42s which I like, but they're cardio only.

Check out Gefell's multi-pattern version of their M930.  It is a new model.  The M930 is held in pretty high regard.

i have the C-42s as well -
the more i think about this the more i keep coming back to the 414 (pair of ULS i think).
small package, proven sonically, lots a patterns, high spl, roll-off, no shockmount (ahhh). i was going to shoot for a budget solution but why not get the right tool in the first place.

any other thoughts?

Milab DC-196.

Can get them in black now so a bit less visable.

Very small for an LDC. Very nice sounding (far better than the new 414s I have tried.
Also have a lifetime warranty and you can get a very neat rubber ring holder for them.

well i pulled the trigger pretty quick on the 414 route.
going with a couple of 414 ULS. these mics seem to fit the bill perfectly (price wise too - which i forgot to mention in the original post).
thanks for the tips though!
