Mp3 player for line-in recording?
« on: January 24, 2008, 09:39:32 PM »

Hi. I know this is a subject easily not taken seriously, but please try.

I used my belowed iRiver H-120's line-in for taking wav quality recordings from gigs, and occasional backups on bigger projects also. It was marvellous for this. Small enough to always be carried along, since it served as an mp3 player also.

However, the iRiver got accidentaly busted by the mighty Control24 Phantom. Since for the price of the repair I would get a new gadget, I want to explore that possibility also.

The only thing that I require is the recording from a line-in, atleast 192kbps mp3, preferably 320kbps or wav.

All I could find with my dated knowledge was the Archos Gmini 402, which is a rather dated product by itself. Seems like all mp3 players with a line-in is limited at recording 128kbps.

Any suggestions on products? Or should I just repair the iRiver H-120? Thanks!

Check out the edirol recorders.   We have several of the R1 mini recorders.. they have an 1/8" stereo line in, and can record directly to flash cards at various mp3 bit rates or in raw wave audio.

I haven't used the R9 (the sucessor.)  The R1 has been good to us...

Hi Garret, and thanks for the reply.

My friend has the R9 and I've used it a few times. It is a good recorder indeed, but for an mp3-player it is very clumsy, uses regular batteries (very short battery life), and it is terribly expensive here in Finland. Atleast double the price of the Archos.

For these reasons I'd like to hear some other models also. I would rather fix my H-120 for 150

If you liked your h120 you should consider updating to a used Iriver h320 or h340. Very nice player. and even more so with Rockbox (www.rockbox.org). Rockbox firmware STOMPS the original firmware - especially when it comes to recording features. It has a peakmeter and can record .wav, .aiff, wavepack and .mp3 files.

unfortunately the h300 series doesn't feature the digital out of the h100 series Sad

H300 can record wav?! That must be the speciality of the Rockbox. I used Rockbox on the H-120, so I know it is the best thing in the world... ;o)

I don't think I ever used the digital out to other than testing purposes, so I wouldn't miss it.

I'll keep my eyes open for a H300. Thanks!

yes, it's a Rockbox feature that the original firmware does not have.
Rockbox works on the h100 series as well btw...
what I like most about it is the higher list scrolling speed (adjustable).
It's extremely customizeable and adjustable, supports album art, replay gain, all kinds of non DRM file formats (even Ogg Vorbis and FLAC), gapless playback of albums, has a gameboy emulator and a game engine for Doom and all kinds of other stuff.

I use this .

It has a 2.5mm stereo line input, ships with the 3.5mm - > 2.5mm cable.  Dunno about the bit rate for the line in off the top of my head - I loaned the device to my wife (for playback purposes) and haven't seen it since!  So I bought one of these which also has the same line in.

Good luck finding the right thing.

Osci-later,

Also, check out the Zoom H2, the M-Audio Mini Track 2496, and the new Tascam DR-1 recorder - all under $300.

Knock it up a few notches with this one:

 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrackII-main.html

And that's the one I went with to replace our aging DAT machines. It has S/PDIF ins, and USB outs, so I don't hafta transfer stuff in real time, or worry about the quality of their A/D's or D/A's.

Just bought one new on eBay for $225.

I've got the little zoom h4 thing and it's awesome. not only can it record mp3's at many bit rates, it'll also record wavs up to 96 24. long battery life off 2 double aa's. the built in xy mics sound great, or, you can plug in your own mics through the 2 xlr ins, or other things in via the 1/4's.
