Anyone have an opinion on the overall usefulness of  the (recent manufacture) Sony C38b FET microphone? What sources does it work well on? How does it compare with, say, a U87? I record just about every style and instrument imaginable, and I'm always looking for something new and interesting. I've read that the C38B is not overly bright, which may make it a good choice for brass.  Is it a good piano or vocal mic? Would it be a practical addition to my mic collection, which consists of:

(1) SM7
(6) SM57

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I have an older C38B and it's an excellent mic for brass and some vocals.

i used the C38B with good results on brass, drums(cardioid on M/S ambiance) as well as acoustic guitars.

i find the "presets" (eq settings) very helpful to have different sounding background vocals from the same singer; and multiple takes for guitars.

battery power is nice on location...

Thanks for the feedback! I'm pretty much set on getting one now, once I find a good price, as I've also heard that the going street of around $1700 is pushing it a bit.
