"Back Side" of Ribbon Mic - Amazing!
« on: June 11, 2007, 02:52:51 PM »

Shocked I recently tried this while recording a trumpet track through a Cascade Fat Head ribbon.  The sound was much more "luscious" and "live" than what I get if recording through the "right" side of the mic....why is that?  The difference is VERY marked! Very Happy

A lot of the newer ribbons have a brighter back side geometry.

I'm sure that microphone has a figure of eight pattern.

Classically, most ribbons do.

That means of course that both front and back are live, whilst the "sides" reject quite well.

Many ribbons exhibit a slightly different character on the "back" side than the "front."

Use the side you like, and you are home free.

I found the same thing my Nady RSM2's. The backside of the 2nd mic was the better sounding of the 2 and actually matched the front of the 1st mic. I don't know why. I just use the side that sounds better. At that price point having a useful tool is a bargain.

Same factory in China.  I imagine there isn't great QC on ribbon installment either.

Thats what I was thinking.. sounds like one was installed facing one way and the other mic is backwards to that.... You might be able to reverse one so they match?

I would imagine I could. If I ever dismantle them to do the mods Terry has described I might flip it. In the mean time using the other side of the mic is no inconvenience. Its labeled.
