$5,000 Shopping Spree
« on: April 13, 2007, 10:33:31 AM »

Hey folks!  New here...first post.

I know $5,000 won't go too far, but...

Given your experience.....If a guy gave you $5,000 and told you that you had to buy mics - or A mic - that would be for Drum OH and Acoustic guitar, what would you buy, and why?

$5k will only get you one audiophile mic cable.

Smile

$5k can buy you a nice mic, there are truly a lot of options.

If you're going to drop that much coin on a mic, it would be highly advisable that you go to a high-end shop and audition several mics.

Yeah...I realize this.  This is why I'm asking what YOU would buy and WHY.  So I can see what other people are using - so I can do some more research and maybe find my best fit.

Thanks for your help!

1. Neumann SM-2--- 3,200?
2. Two Neumann KM84s--- $800 or a pair for 1,600?
3. Bova Ball ---$500

The 84s could be replaced by something else but IMO the SM-2 is THE (versatile) mic and the Bova balls are a cool alternative.

Well I'd buy a pair of used U87s and pocket the rest.

Yeah...I know....right?

Cuz it's really ignorant to ask someone's preference in microphones on particular instrument.   Thumbs Down

what kind of mic pre's do you have? After getting my first 4 channel API, all of my current mics (414's, sm81s, 4038's etc) sounded like they've never sounded before

Pinduro:  Digital Recording, 24/96

Mic Pre:  I only have the True-Systems P-2 Analog (2-Channel $1500)

I wouldn't be abject to preamp suggestions along with your mic suggestions.

Thanks again for your help.

Yeah...I realize this.  This is why I'm asking what YOU would buy and WHY.

My personal preference would lie with a stereo pair of AKG C 480 with the CK61 capsules.  I have this sick love of those mics.  I'd even get the Omni capsules as sometimes an omni on the AC does the trick.  I also like the Senn MKH-40.  Also a sick love.

Since I like M/S on acoustic guitar, I'd also throw a nice multi-patern mic into the mix that can do figure 8 and there are many choices...  Or a ribbon (figure 8 ).  I'd look at a Geffel UM92 (which I am recently discovering) or a Royer R121.

I'd upgrade your pre-amps as well.  You can't go wrong with the APIs or a Great River, but since you asked what I would do, the Pendulum MDP-1 has been turning my crank lately - particularly on acoustic guitar.

what he said. I go to gearslutz when I feel like having this type of convo Smile.. at least thats what it seemed like at first glance when you were asked the question. but now I see your just looking to see what is the best thing to get next.

Id have to agree with the rodes and AT.

personally on that budget Id get 2 AT4050 and 2 km84.
