Could I Get Rid of iTunes Yet?
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:33:55 PM »

so my 'puter crashed and all my itunes metadata is erased.

i hate this app.  i hate the way it makes me feel. itunes (nee soundjam) is not for me.

i hate that i wasted time organizing and rating... knowing that if i moved the files to another hard drive. all the metadata would all be gone; just like now.

this is NOT a business thing. it's for pleasure. but frankly, this app is not very fun, "wizualizers" notwithstanding. itunes makes too much work for me. imo, the computer should do the work, not make extra work;  especially clerical work.

so i wish to fire itunes,  i hate just about every ill behavior it exhibits: from adding "tamborine 43" to my "library", to never finding the jacket art.  to playing at random when i just want to hear one song, to not playing a full group of songs that is dropped on it's icon.  not to mention (but i will) it's wanton violations of apple's own u.i. design guidelines. itunes sucks very much; from version 1 through version 7. i've had enough!

any suggestions for a replacement?

Man that sucks to no end.

In iTunes you can save the whole metadata as a separate document for import/export. Then again, if you don't do it before a crash it's not going to help. As far as the music you buy from the iTunes shop, it's a breeze to have it all come back to your library. Then again, for everything else you do not buy from iTunes you're screwed.

backing up is simple enough, but imo, itunes shouldn't need to have a metadata file to store ratings or even a tag that groups it with a specific playlist along with other tracks, there are tons of empty id3 tags that could be used.

then when you'd move or copy a file, all its metadata would stay with it. doh!

then we could do this like writing on the tape box. i think we know that much about running a music library, seems that apple does not.

i guess i am looking for an applescript that will short-circuit the bastard: transfer song ratings from itunes to a commonly unused id3 tag in each music file... and vice-versa.

spotlight ought to be able to read id3 tags; then it could generate playlists on a whim for the user.

Yes, that is correct.

But if you have a "PC" hardware laptop, try it with a great distro like Sabayon; you'll like it.

Just to hit you from left field, how about dumping the ipod on ebay and grabbing a Creative Zen.  While I do not own one, I have bought and set up units for both my parents and my brother in law.  I like the file format options and also the fact that it works with just about any audio app you like, or if you are like me, I access the thing as a harddrive and just use the command line or file manager to move files over (metadata <or tags> and all.)

They are really nice units.

Terry, what is the attraction to or focus of Sabayon?  Is it a distro specifically for audio?

Sabayon is the best competition for Mac OSX out there in the world today.

*In some ways, it is even cooler: you can do many things in it that you can't even do yet in OSX. And almost all software is free.

*In other ways, it is not as cool: Apple is a closed system, and you can pretty much be guaranteed that every product will work, no wierd drivers, etc.  With Sabayon, or any Linux distro, you have to mess around with drivers and configs a bit more.

Sabayon is full-featured, not at all just for audio.

If you want one "just for audio," try Fervent Software's Studio-To-Go.

thanks to whomever mentioned it. (dave t.)

surely something similar could run on my machine with my own music library?

so i have a clue now what kind of thing i want,  (sabyon was not the answer)

i think that such software will exist... still looking.
