Pre amps for Eckmiller (passive) EQs?
« on: January 16, 2007, 04:20:28 PM »

Hi Oliver, and everyone else at this brilliant forum,

I have two Eckmiller passive EQs that I need pre amps for. It?s the Eckmiller PF 5/8H and the Eckmiller W86A. As far as I can tell from the German manuals they need 34dB gain as they are passive units, ie. the old German standard of eg. the V72.
Would you recomend the V72, and if so, which specific model? Or would other pre amps be better?

W86A manual:

I use them with V72 to make up the gain & it sounds good 2 me

I suspect the idea originally was for people to use V72 as the 'official' counterpart of the Eckmillers - but does anyone know?

Hello guys,

as Ryan pointed out the V72 was original the official counterpart.... Historical speaking the EQ was buffered by the V72 that was making up the 34 dB loss, but it will sound different if you patch it in front of it.

Today with the high prices of the V72 a V72a would shine in that set up because it was designed as a buffer, or a modified V74(a)...
If you do not want to drop that much money for tube gear, the V672 will sound great if you hook it up before it.

I have the entire documentation for the PF version but I have to dig it up first.

Best regards,

Thank you, Oliver. I reckon the V72a would be the one then. If possible, I?d love to get hold of the Eckmiller PF papers. Smile

Cheers!

So would I!

I really like the PF 5/8H for vocals btw.

Yeah, I reckon they would be good for vocals. They are quite subtle the EQs, right? I haven?t really been able to test use them thoroughly, though I tried to use some old Danish DISA 91B21 valve pre amps (the Danish V72), however the levels didn?t seem to be match, ie. maybe it didn?t gain 34dB as needed. A LOVELY amp though Smile Check out one of the racks we had made at HE Studiotechnik in Germany:

Yeah, they are so smooth you can boost a lot more than you need to by accident if you're not careful.

The Eckmiller W86a sound great - very sweet and musical sounding..
Really the 'bomb' on bass guitar..
I assume they were made with classical music in mind (?) because its low and high end shelving, thats all...
