Reaper DAW
« on: November 27, 2006, 03:38:23 PM »

I thought I would start a new thread on this DAW with Reaper in the title so that everyone gets a chance to check this thing out, and any users here can notify us all of updates.

http://www.reaper.fm/download.php

I am blown away every time I go back to the site to find a new update, with several new features having been implemented each time.

Not only that, I just got a feature request implemented today that I had asked for only a week or so ago! I use 2 20" monitors, and had requested that the mixer be able to show multiple rows of faders "stacked" on top of each other so that I could keep my mixer on the 2nd monitor and not have to scroll too much. That new feature just showed up in version 1.44, and it works great!

This type of development, based on user feature requests, is exactly the way software development should be done IMO. The developers are constantly on their forum addressing the needs of users, and the development speed is unbelievable.

Midi is coming along very quickly as well.

Here is the original thread discussing Reaper:

http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/t/14038/11771/

This app is going to be a serious contender in the DAW wars.

It doesn't look like much yet....

But Reaper for OSX is on its way!

EDIT: The image keeps getting updated as it progresses, so if this link doesn't work, here is the forum thread it came from.

Considering it only took a year to get where Reaper for PC is, OSX development will probably be even faster.

If you are interested, please get on the Reaper forum and let the developers know, as there are mainly PC users voicing their opinions. You can also have a direct impact on the feature set as it develops.

CD image writing and burning was also recently added to the PC version, as well as a bunch of other new features.

I think this type of software development needs to be supported so we can continue to have choices available, especially when it comes from very responsive and talented developers.

I will check this out.

The response from developers you mention is what I've been seeing from Sabayon on their OS.  It really makes a difference!

Seems like a very interesting alternative/addition to the OSX audiotools.
There doesn't seem to be a public beta yet though Sad

Looking forward to trying out reaper.
The comuntiy is very active.

Although they like their Mac bashing! Very Happy

I downloaded it last night, and have been using it today, with no problems, until...
I set the VST Plugins path, and Reaper crashed whilst checking what plugins were in there..
Bugger.
It worked fine when I restarted it, but with this happening within my first 10 mins of experience with Reaper I think I'll stick with SAWstudio for now (incredibly reliable), but I'll keep trying Reaper at home as updates occur, cos I certainly do like how often Justin updates it according to what the users ask for.

I don't think this Justin Frankel guy actually sleeps...

The OSX version is starting to take shape, even while major enhancements continue on the PC version. Apparently the audio engine work is already done, and it is just a matter of  developing the OSX GUI.

As far as VST plugin issues, there are definitely some that are causing problems for some people, and there is a list of them in the compatibility thread. Most of them appear to be the more obscure freebie types, and not the major ones. If you have the time and interest Jason, you should post which plugin you think is causing the crash.

I haven't had any stability issues with any of my plugins, and this latest version is now much more responsive with large projects.

I'm not ready to kick Cubase SX3 out the door yet, but if Reaper development keeps up at this pace, that may just happen. Having it available for Mac and PC will also be a major plus.

no way of knowing which plugin caused the crash, as I wasn't actually USING a plugin, just scanning through them automatically, having just told Reaper what folder the VST pluings were in. And I have LOADS of plugins.

...looks a little like the PC version pasted into a Mac window...

but it seems to be coming along quite nicely.
