many years ago i was sent down to Miami to record him after he came out of prison
like late 80's, might actually have been 90 -91
I sat in a studio for like a week and no one showed up
then finally one day
2 huge bodyguard types walked in
looked me
looked at me like I was about to have my ass kicked
and then
walked out
about 10 minutes later
the girl from Scotti Brothers records calls me up from LA and says I'm going home
I ask why and she says "Cause you are a white Honky and James will not be recording unless he is a brother"
I guess at that time he was not going to have it

Then cut to
like 5 years later
I get hired to record a Japanese Crab Miso Soup commercial
"MISO CANEEBA" or some shit
I am told they will want it to be like James Brown
I get to the studio and it actually is James !
They had hired James and were paying him a zillion dollars to say
"MISO CANEEBA" and do ad libs like
"JUMP BACK" "WOW" "HUH" and then say
" MISO CANEEBA" to a track like I feel Good
was just downright weird
I felt like I was in musical outerspace
The Godfather of Soul doing cliche JB ad libs and then trying to be coached into saying his Japanese lines in the right spots
"MEEESOOO CANEEEEBA, jump back touch myself wow hey !!"
I thought
someday I will be telling this story ......

my JB stories ...

My James Brown experience was to be invited to just watch a  session in the mid-70's.

What i was amazed at was when they sat down to mix, and James would sit at the desk and say "Now the guitars!" and he'd LITERALLY push the guitar fader ALL the way up, then a few bars later he'd exclaim "and now the CONGAS" and sure enough he'd yank the guitar fader and shove the conga fader ALL the way up.
it was wild.

and yet, at the end of the night it sounded like a James Brown record.

When they were actually recording, the players were just amazing together.
Grooving from beat one.

but my FAVOURITE James Brown story, i heard only second hand:

Apparently one day Joe Beck (who is a terrific guitar player) was hired for a James Brown session.
Predictably enough, the players sat around for hours waiting, and eventually James Brown, and his entourage, stroll in.
The man walks into the studio in a grand entrance and says "Hi everybody. I'm James Brown, you can all call me Mr. Brown."
at which point Joe yells out "Right On, James!"

James simply points and says "YOU! OUT!"

and that's that.

James Brown, for me, was maybe the coolest ever.  This from a 50-something, upper-middle-class white conservative.  He certainly always struck me as a complete original... and so,so black (African-American?).  He was BAD 40 years before bad existed.  LOVED the processed hair, the thing with the cape and coaxing him to come back to the front and sing some more, the screams, "good GOD", "Heh" and all the rest.  And those trebly electric guitar 9th chords and minor 6th chords.  Where would Tower Of Power and Chic (just to name a couple) have been without his influence?  What a loss.  Belongs in the same category as Miles & Jimi--totally defined it.

Goodbye Mr Brown - another music icon departs this plane,

One of the greatest live concerts I ever saw in my life was JB,

Amazing he was still out there gigging at age 73 - when most people of that age would be content to be spending their days hanging on a lawn chair & playing with the grandkids,

RIP

Now the family thinks they will turn the home in Augusta into another "Graceland!"

They have contacted the Presley Estate for advice.

I just can't see that working...

As of today, I think it's still in the house in a temperature controlled room, while they decide how to proceed.

Some people...
