(new) api 200/500 mic pre or Telefunken V672 pre
« on: November 28, 2006, 10:25:34 AM »

First of al, sorry for interupting you guys on this forum, but I am in need of some feedback here.

O.k. now...I am thinking about buying 2 pre-amps for my main recordings which are:
- accoustic guitar
- electric guitar
- vocals.

Mic's used: 414TL2/TLM193/MD421/SM57. In future also ribbon.
I don't use compressors, but place mic's till I have the sound I want.

Since I don't have money to spend twice I would like to get some reactions from people who A/B-ed both pre-amps (see title) and would like to know what there personal conclusions where.
(Please, no chit chat about other mic-pre's, which might be better or someting).

Also...is the factor new (api) or old (telefunken) a big issue?
I know someone who can service the telefunkens. De thing with the 672 pre's is that there are a lot of versions, so getting 2 that sound the same (i.e. voor stereo) is quite difficult.

My gut feeling is telling me to go for the API's, and put 2 pre's in a lunchbox, so I can always buy additional pre's.
They keep there value, so I also thing it's a good investment.

Just want to inform myself, before the buy. Here in Holland there is no API dealer/distributor, so I can't try them out.

Hope you can give me your personal conclusions on these mic pre amps.

If you go the 672 route have Oliver Archut do the racking, refurb and whatnot.

Ill check him out then.

I was checking out the website of seventhcircleaudio??
Anyone have their products? Like to know if it's o.k.
Looking at the components, they are top notch through out.

Good alternative for the 2 mics I have mentioned.

The components in the Seventh Circle Audio stuff are very good. From my limited experience I can tell you I own a couple of vintage Langevin Am 451 channel strips racked into preamps and a pair of SCA A12s, (there is room for 6 more SCA pres in the chassis), and the SCA preamps sound at least as good as the Langevins plus the are new, have more repeatable and flexible gain settings and they don't misbehave, and if you are dealing with vintage units, that can be an issue. I really like the SCA stuff.

hi lynyrd,

thanx for your feedback.

Did you do the soldering of the components yourself?
I have enough soldering experience, so I'm gonna do it myself.

I did put my SCAs together myself and had them checked out by my local tech. They were not hard to solder at all.

Hi folks,

I dropped the API Idea, since the prices here in Europe are insane for API units. I will buy a Telefunken 672 in Germany and refurbish/service it.

Instead of the API, I looked for some good other options and found my answer in a JLM Audio BA2 (dual pre).

The BA2 sounds very good on accoustic- and electric guitars and also for (fast/direct sounding) vocals. I rather do vocals on a slower pre like a telefunken 672 or V72, but the BA2 will do an excellent job for now. This thing is so fast and full sounding, that it will also do an excellent job on drums/percussion.

Anyways...I'm done for the pre's for now and just bought a Mesa Blue Angel amphead and Marshall 1960AX cabinet for recording guitars in my own band.

Guitar track 1: Shure SM57 /(not too)close-miced / Altec 1567
Guitar track 2: AKG414TL2 / roommic L / JLM BA2
Guitar track 3: AKG414ULS / roommic R / JLM BA2
all printed to quantegy tape on a Fostex G16.

Maybe we'll put a mic above the toilett aswell...just to make sure we get a crazy soundeffect of it...for turds sake.

Thanx for the replies y'all  Cool
