2 bus on the cheap
« on: July 28, 2006, 12:46:22 PM »

I did a search in here.... hopefully this is the first Wink

Im always looking to find cheap compression and there is a thread somewhere dedicated to that search. in the next few months I'll be pondering a compressor specifically for the 2 bus inserts.

So out of the cheap compressors currently available on todays market new and used, which is most suitable for using on the 2 bus?

I currently own...

2 RNC, 1 DBX166, 1 Alesis 3630 and a AMR COMP/LIM De-esser.

Clamping it with some Character... Smile and cheap means under $300...

Thanks...

For those of you who are handy the SSL DIY kits are the way to go for "that sound."

Here's the rub, you can come close to that on some of the schematics if you buy the parts yourself, make your own faceplate and what not. Otherwise I'd say the best choice out there is nothing and that's as cheap as it gets.

I've had some song dependent luck with the Fairchild and
La2a plugins from the UAD-1.

I was doing to some reseach to Fibe's suggestion on the DIY path. I found alot of info and it seems there are alot of people doing them for $300 to $500 and yet the SSL one is well over $3000. Unbelievable that DIYer can assemble it for so cheap without the advantage of a bulk discount.

Thanks for the ITB info Jason but I should have noted analog hardware variants only..

Fibes is right, you can build a nice comp for cheap, but some prior experience is needed. You might want to check out the Gyraf we site for GSSL clone.

And...it will take you time. Lots of time...

You might want to have listen/look at the ART Pro VLA. Seems right in your budget, and can be impressive for the price tag.

Thanks Mario Smile

I had forgotten that some people have gotten those modded to improve them even further without too much money...

I'm leaning towards the DIY... I haven't done a audio DIY since I was in my 20's...

i contacted someone via email who had built a couple of SSL clones & the impression i got was that if i really wanted an SSL compressor i should buy one. that doesn't mean the DIY isn't any good, but you probably shouldn't expect a $3000 comp for $300.

i don't know what the AMR is, but the other comps you list are not good enough for the 2 bus. imo it's better to have nothing on it than something that will degrade your mix, you're better off leaving it till mastering. but you can look down the avenue of a plug-in to apply after or during the mix (depending on what your setup is). i use the wavelab peak master, magneto & waves L3 ultramaximizer to get close to where i want.

I think if the rest of the setup is "on the cheap" then there is no harm really in using plugs on the 2-bus...  it ain't gonna make it worse Smile...    over at the slutz forums there is this country ME that just got a #1 mixing a complete album ITB - not even external summing...   listned to it, it did not sound as bad as living lavida loca!....  I could not bear the music, but the mix was 'aight!   ain't as great as an OTB mix, but close enough to warrant not excluding a plug as one of your options maybe...
