Where should my levels be
« on: December 10, 2005, 04:16:14 PM »

Right now when I record I bring all the faders 3-5db down and mix accordingly so they don't clip the master fader. Is this enough headroom or should I bring them down lower? And how many db are usually squeezed out post master fader? When I give bands a demo cd to take home at the end of the day I'm still not sure how many db I should be adding to get close to commercial level(I'm using Sony's Inflator). Thanks for any help, guys

Don't mix into the mix buss limiter with digital, leave some room up there, to master out.

I record tracks at lower levels, to take advantage of not having tape noise anymore.  Surprised oh my god... I just remembered what we all loved about even crappy digital.

I find nearing 0 on the 2 buss is very harsh.

There was a whole thread on this, i forget what it was called or else id paste a link. It was how i found this gold mine.
Summing up, with digital recording at -12db was the outcome.

Dont know if that helps.

Putting a limiter on your master bus will make your mastering engineer very unhappy...

Phi Lion, what should be at -12? The peaks or the average level of the faders?

Pooky NMR, this is just for demo stuff before mastering. Kind of "minute mastering" if you will. I was just wondering where the peaks should be if I'm going for sheer loudness

Im not sure WRT loudness but the -12db discussion had to do with obtaining a nice clean digital non harsh signal.

From my experience it is a lot easier to increase the volume of a well recorded clean signal than it is with a signal or mix that has had each element of the mix pushed to the limit and has that gritty
element, which aint too pleasant to my ears.
Digital domain.

I find in dgital that a -6dbfs maximum peak level on the tracks is best for summing and plugin i/o.

Best,

Andrew, read all 15 or so pages of a great thread here previously.  The level questions are addressed about mid point:

http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/4918/0/128 /6490/?SQ=c6e5f5ed35c51528cad5d3fccdc3bc38

I'll see if this thread can be "stickied."  It comes up a lot.
